Cars that run on blood? We'll take that for a spin!

Syfy will soon be embracing gritty exploitation with the over-the-top action horror series, Blood Drive. Set in the near-apocalyptic future, the 13-episode series will center around an L.A. cop who's forced to join a twisted cross-country death race featuring cars powered by human blood.

Suffice to say that if you loved Mad Max: Fury Road (and who doesn't?), Blood Drive will get your engines revving.

"This highly stylized roller coaster ride is a throwback to 1970s grindhouse cinema," says Syfy's own Present, Dave Howe. "With its fast-paced thrills and indie feel, Blood Drive will make an exciting and edgy addition to Syfy's growing slate of original scripted series."

Whilst old-school grindhouse cinema has been embraced by contemporary filmmakers such as Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino and Rob Zombie, it isn't a style you see on the small screen too often.

"The grindhouse cinema style remains largely untapped in television," said Jeff Wachtel, Chief Content Officer, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment and President, Universal Cable Productions. "The combination of gritty action and dark humor can push the envelope in some fun and unexpected ways."

Blood Drive will be coming at you from executive producers John Hlavin (Underworld Awakening, The Shield) and David Straiton (Bates Motel, Hemlock Grove), along with producers Mark Wheeler (Becoming) and Frederik Malmberg (Let Me In)
