The elves in Iceland are so ingrained in the culture that roads are even rerouted to avoid disturbing places where they might live. Residents have been known to answer "yes and no" when asked if they believe in the creatures' existence. Often described as small human beings, the elves of Iceland are reported to be concerned with preserving nature.

At Hafnarfjordur, on the outskirts of Reykjavik, there is a large rock that's generally considered an elf habitat. Tourists often come to see one of the places where the road was diverted to avoid disturbing any supernatural residents near the large stone.
