Location: Blatce, Czech Republic
Most castles are defensive fortifications, meant to keep people out. This week, GHI investigates the Czech Republic's Castle Houska, a structure supposedly built to keep something in. Legend has it that the castle, dating back to the 13th century, was built over the Gates of Hell and meant to keep evil spirits from escaping into the world. Needless to say, the team is champing at the bit to get a crack at this gothic fortress.
On arrival, GHI meets Ty McGee, the castle's property manager. He gives a rundown of the construction and history of the place, including its occupation by Nazi forces in the 1930s. He also talks at length about sightings of demonic creatures, dark shapes and other phenomena that have been reported and experienced...not least by his own pets, who reacted strangely in the castle's Inner Courtyard.
The tour of the castle takes our team through several locations, including a chapel, built over a pit of unknown depth, in which the Nazi occupiers supposedly conducted experiments. We also see a hunting lodge where several witnesses have made sightings, and a dungeon area ominously dubbed "Satan's Office." Needless to say, Castle Houska certainly looksforeboding.
The briefing complete, the team sets up its equipment and begins its investigation. Robb and Joe have a little luck in the chapel, hearing a banging noise and noticing a strange effect with a light that shouldn't be flickering, but is. Robb also brings Ty McGee's dog into the inner courtyard, but don't get the same reaction that was previously described. Joe and Ashley experience some dark, negative feelings in Satan's Office, and Barry and Brandy have some questionable experiences in the cellar, but the real show is just about to begin.
Ashley and Dustin are in the castle's attic when they start hearing noises. Attempting to provoke a response, Dustin tosses a rock toward the back of the room...and is startled to hear the sound of something moving across the floor! Adrenaline runs high as our two investigators begin to see moving shadows and other strange events. Finally, Barry is summoned with his camera. He sets it, up, but the camera begins to malfunction, taking pictures on its own. Convinced there's something going on in the attic, Dustin and Barry leave the camera to shoot and continue exploring other parts of the castle.
The night's work done, the team retires and begins its analysis of the evidence. Sound recordings confirm the experience Dustin and Ashley had in the attic, as well as a sound coinciding with the malfunction of Barry's camera. All are convinced that the attic experience was authentic and proof of some sort of presence.
Finally, Robb and Dustin brief Ty McGee on what they found. They relate the team's various personal experiences at the castle, including moving shadows, the sound of breathing being heard, and Dustin's encounter in the attic. The client is happy to have his own personal experiences confirmed, and while Robb can't definitively say that Castle Houska is over a gate of any kind, he's very confident in his ability to declare the place haunted...as hell.
