The Providence is caught in a storm and dragged through the vortex of a whirlpool - the portal to the Land of the Dead. The gang come to on the coast of a strange land. To go any further they must pass through a locked gate. Taryn (disguised as Tiger) predicts that Sinbad will be able to open it, and indeed he is.
The gang enter the City of Limbo, but Sinbad is trapped in the beam of a Guardian which makes lost souls recognise the truth of their death. He wakes in Basra. His friends are leading worse lives - Rina still a mercenary pickpocket, Anwar a frustrated academic, while Gunnar has given into his rage. None of them recognise Sinbad, although Anwar confesses he ran away to the Providence Sinbad spoke of, but was sent back because he was so seasick.
In Limbo, Gunnar attacks Tiger, convinced she is not Tiger they know. Taryn separates from Tiger and reveals she is looking for someone too. Gunnar rescues Sinbad from the Guardian, but he is still locked in.
Meanwhile in alternate Basra, Sinbad finds Jamil, who tells him his mother died when pregnant. Taryn uses her powers to reach Sinbad. He wakes torn by the realisation he is dead. Sinbad is about to sacrifice himself to the Guardians to save his friends, when Jamil rescues him. He persuades Sinbad to rescue Taryn's daughter Alehna, who they find in the library. Alehna surprises Sinbad, telling him his father came here to rescue him and his mother. He is a child of both the land of the dead and of the living. As Guardians threaten to overwhelm them, Anwar finds a secret exit. They escape, but, unbeknownst to the others, an evil presence possesses Alehna. Jamil sacrifices himself to save Sinbad from a Giant Guardian. Back on the boat Sinbad comes to terms with the loss of Jamil, whilst Alehna watches with an evil smile.
