New Star Wars: The Last Jedi clip teases Rey's temptation

It’s not quite Dec. 15 despite what the holiday music in every store may imply, so that means the steady teaser train from Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi will continue to drive up excitement for the few weeks. The most recent addition to the fervor is a new 30-second spot focused on the struggle Rey (Daisy Ridley) will face in the next film.

Rey, reaching out into the Force during her island training with Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), finds troubling feelings. These feelings, summed in narration as “light, darkness, and something else,” are juxtaposed with images of Supreme Leader Snoke and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) reaching out toward the camera.

This temptation, this choice, comes sold to viewers at a high price as Luke cries Rey’s name over her shoulder as she is seemingly lost in her own mind. This is the most acting we’ve seen from Hamill in the new film — even more than his Millennium Falcon entrance in the World Series clip — so it is exciting to watch him back in action.

The warring moral factions (and sides of the Force) for Rey’s allegiance may be the true plot of the film, and the answer to the title’s riddle. Call-outs beckoning viewers to “choose your path” seem to confirm this, but there will be no way to truly know until the film hits theaters. However, with teases like this, the guessing game alone is entertaining enough.
