Meanwhile, Deacon and Hannah have caught up to Cassie and Cole in 1945. They've been looking for their son throughout time, and Hannah and Deacon are hot on their trail. Though they're able to escape, Cole begs with his former friends to stop following them.
Jones, meanwhile, is still frantically searching for Cassie and Cole. She believes that she can find them and take them down for their betrayal. But it's lke they can't quite catch up with them each time.
Jones goes to visit Olivia, who tells her that Cassie and Cole are learning to think like The Witness. Jones believes that Olivia can help, and so she lets her go, much to the anger of Jennifer Goines, who is still trying to keep the whole work family together.
Jennifer has to work fast. Now that Olivia is out of her prison, she's told Jones what should have been obvious - that Cassie and Cole are able to evade them because they're taking their cues from Jennifer Goines. Turns out, she's been protecting them all this time. And so, she creates a diversion.
These two. Dressed for 1899. They're looking for something from The Word of the Witness called "The Red Death." And they find it in an ad for a fancy dress ball. Also, he teaches Cassie how to pickpocket.
And also! Hannah and Deacon and Jones are here! She takes Cole to the dance floor, tells him she has a gun, and Deacon takes Cassie off to question her. While everyone wants the Witness dead, Cassie and Cole try to convince them that The Witness can change.
As they escape with Sebastian, Cassie and Cole find that Athan has decided he doesn’t need a guardian and has gone off 20 years prior with the splinter suit. Athan, it turns out, wants a destiny that is his own, not that of The Witness.
It's still confusing as to why this moment is important, until Sebastian realizes that HE's the pauper mentioned in the map. As Sebastian creates a distraction for Cassie and Cole to splinter away, Deacon kills him.
