Part 1: The Overlords

Warning: If you don't want to know what happened in this episode, don't read this photo recap!

It’s four years later, and the children of Earth, including Jennifer, have got it pretty good. Brought up in a world of plenty, they are nearly perfect — physically and mentally. Turns out, some even have telekinetic and psychic powers.

Then the creepy stuff happens. Kids all around the world fall into a kind of trance, raising their right hands towards the sky, hailing and chanting for Jennifer. Some tweens take it one step further, and actually show up at the Greggson’s doorstep, looking for their leader.

Jennifer has the singular ability to see the entire universe. Naturally her parents (and us) are freaked out by her, so they move the family to New Athens.

New Athens is much like the metropolises we know and love today: they’re polluted, smelly, overcrowded, and death is always lingering in an alley somewhere.

Milo tries to phone in a few questions to Jennifer. But the wunderkind is having none of it, and disrupts his feed. She leaves him with this bleak message, "The end begins.”

Milo wants to investigate The Overlords up close, so he convinces his (heartbroken) girlfriend Rachel to vacuum-pack him, in preparation for transference to The Overlords’ ship.

Ricky, who's still dying, wrestles with reality and memory inside the dream world honeymoon suite Karellen has so graciously transported him back to.

It is by letting go of Annabelle that Ricky can truly embrace Ellie, and die in peace. Getting the chance to share a few last laughs and say goodbye to her beloved gives Ellie a sense of peace, too.

Karellen addresses the people of Earth one last time to tell them the world is going to be ending, and their children will leave them to be with Jennifer and evolve in peace. He also mentions no more children will be born.

Children everywhere are called up to the sky and begin floating away. Meanwhile, a despondent Jerry Hallcross, the mayor of New Athens, blows up the city and all the remaining adults in it.

Milo is introduced to The Overmind, the consciousness of the universe. It tells him that when people perish, they pool back into the "collective mind".

Back on Earth 80 years later, Milo reports back to The Overlords his findings of interest. All of humanity has essentially died out.

On Earth, Jennifer is harvesting energy from every possible source. But before she depletes the planet and destroys it, Milo is given the opportunity to relive his most cherished memories - a call back to a simpler time before the introduction of Utopia.
