HIM: Everything to Know About Jordan Peele-Produced Horror Film Starring Marlon Wayans
The sports-based thriller about a rising quarterback in over his head arrives on the big screen September 19.
With its mysterious one-word title and enigmatic marketing campaign, HIM (in theaters everywhere September 19) could easily be mistaken for Oscar-winner Jordan Peele's newest movie.
But while Peele is only a producer, his fingerprints are all over this sports-based horror flick starring comedy legend Marlon Wayans as a sinister mentor to a rising quarterback played by Tyriq Withers. Justin Tipping (Kicks) directed the upcoming film and shares screenplay credit with Zack Akers and Skip Bronkie, whose original draft was included in the 2022 Black List of most-liked scripts.
"I was an athlete my entire life. My first word was 'ball,'" Tipping explains in the latest issue of Empire (on sale here). "About halfway through playing soccer in college, I gave up and started pursuing film. That was my new love. So I have this love of sports as well as the inner-workings of the psychology of athletes, and I'm a cinephile. I thought it was exciting to take on a film that was giving the promise of a sports drama, but at the same time delivering horror."
"At Monkeypaw [Peele's production company], we love ideas that shouldn't be made and that we're not supposed to touch, and the combination of sports and horror was something I had never quite seen," adds Peele. "It was just clear that we had a genre mash-up that was right up my alley."
What is HIM about?
HIM centers around Cameron Cade (former college wide-receiver Tyriq Withers), a rising-star quarterback who eats, sleeps, and lives football. On the eve of professional football's annual scouting Combine, Cade is attacked by an unhinged fan and suffers a potentially career-ending brain injury. Just when all hope seems lost, the young man receives an invitation to train at the remote compound of his personal hero, eight-time Championship quarterback Isaiah White (Marlon Wayans).
"But as Cam’s training accelerates, Isaiah’s charisma begins to curdle into something darker, sending his protégé down a disorienting rabbit hole that may cost him more than he ever bargained for," reads the official synopsis.
Peele is a producer on the film with Ian Cooper, Win Rosenfeld, and Jamal M. Watson. David Kern and Kate Oh are executive producers.
Who stars in HIM?
HIM stars Marlon Wayans (Scary Movies), Tyriq Withers (I Know What You Did Last Summer), Julia Fox (Uncut Gems), Tim Heidecker (Us), and Australian comedian Jim Jefferies (The Jim Jefferies Show).
The film also marks the feature acting debuts of MMA heavyweight fighter Maurice Greene and hip-hop phenoms Guapdad 4000 and Grammy nominee Tierra Whack.

What is HIM rated?
The movie has received an R rating "for strong bloody violence, language throughout, sexual material, nudity and some drug use" (via FilmRatings.com).
When does HIM open in theaters?
HIM hits the big screen Friday, September 19 via Universal Pictures. Tickets are not yet on sale.
