Match Made in Heaven: Horror Icons Sam Raimi and Jordan Peele Team Up for Portrait of God

The horror gods have answered our prayers!

Celebrated genre icons Sam Raimi (Evil Dead) and Jordan Peele (Get Out) are officially teaming up to produce a horror movie entitled Portrait of God through their Ghost House and Monkeypaw banners, Deadline confirmed.

Dylan Clark, who wrote and directed the horror short that inspired the project (see below), will helm the feature-length adaptation, working off a screenplay he's co-writing with Joe Russo. The latter is not related to the Marvel Studios directing duo behind Avengers: Infinity War, Endgame, and the forthcoming Doomsday.

Nevertheless, he still boasts an impressive résumé as writer, producer, and development executive at major entertainment companies (including SYFY) and producer for seven seasons of the Mick Garris-hosted podcast, Post Mortem.

As Russo wrote on Instagram, "Sometimes you write a script that brings cinematic Gods together for the first time ever.

Uploaded to YouTube in the summer of 2022, Portrait of God has racked up more than 8 million views as of publication.

The short opens with a Biblical quote from the Old Testament about human being incapable of comprehending the infinite nature of God: "No man shall see Me and live" (Exodus 33:20). It's like Lovecraft without the tentacles.

It then transitions to Mia Reilly (Sydney Brumfield), a young religious woman preparing for an art-related presentation on a portrait whose appearance varies from person to person. Some only see a blank canvas while others swear the work shows a person in the darkness. It's all conjecture until Mia comes face-to-face with the portrait's chilling entity, which puts her faith to the test.

The eventual theatrical version will be released by Universal Pictures, which bought the project on spec. 

Peele, of course, collaborated with the studio on numerous projects—including his first three films, Nia DaCosta's Candyman, Dev Patel's Monkey Man, and Justin Tipping's Him. Peele's fourth outing as writer-director was initially slated for an Oct. 23, 2026 debut, but has since been removed from Universal's calendar.

Raimi, meanwhile, has also enjoyed the role of a producer on projects like Crawl, Nightbooks, Don't Breathe, Locked, and Evil Dead Rise. He returned to directing after a nearly 10-year hiatus to make Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. His next feature, Send Help (a Misery meets Castaway thriller starring Rachael McAdams and Dylan O'Brien) washes ashore Jan. 30, 2026 by way of 20th Century Studios.
