Warning: If you don't want to know what happened in this episode, don't read this photo recap!
Dutch: "I know you're out there. And I know that you'll eventually hear me. Wherever he's taken you, whatever he's done to you. I will find you. I will find you." Picking things up where we left off last Season we see Dutch leaving a message for D'avin who's recently been kidnapped by Khlyen.
Yet the next thing we see is Dutch, Dav, and Johnny on a mission together. They're on Arkyn, closing in on the facility where Khlyen took Dav at the end of last season. So the rescue already happened then?
After getting thwarted by some kind of defense shield around Arkyn, Johnny and Dutch go see Bellus on Leith to inquire about the Connaver gang, who are rumored to have been able to get onto Arkyn. They need to find whatever tech the Connavers used to get past the Arkyn shields.
After Bellus tells them that the last known location of that tech was in a barter town called Eulogy, Pree (who's traveling with Dutch and Johnny) lets out a yelp. Turns out you can't even get into Eulogy if you're not a known criminal possessing stolen goods. Johnny's got the stolen goods, and it turns out Pree is a known criminal. Pree: "Oh, like you don't have skeletons."
After Lucy disables the systems in the casino to help Dutch escape, Dutch instead runs into a roadblock. This is Clara. The Connavers are keeping her prisoner and actually implanted their shield device INSIDE her so she'd guard it.
Dav's latest dream journey takes him to some kind of slaughter between Scarbacks and people bleeding green blood, and suddenly he sees Khlyen, who looks at him and says, "You're not supposed to see this yet." Dav breaks free of his hallucination and demands to know what the doctors are doing to him.
Meanwhile on Eulogy, Clara turns out to be far more of a modified person than we expected. Dutch offers to help her flee, but Clara says not without Alice. Who's Alice? Alice is Clara's good arm. It's very useful. Dutch, Clara, and Alice kick ass on their way out of the casino.
Khlyen and the scientists discuss Dav's rejection of the procedure. Is he immune? "No one is immune," says Khlyen. There's a skirmish with Dav, and but instead of killing Dav, Khlyen kills the scientists. He tells a very untrusting Dav to follow him. "Stay and die or leave with me. Make your choice."
So what's the deal with Clara? She's a hack mod, sold to the Connavers to cover a debt and modified by The Factory into a human/machine hybrid. She's pretty badass, and both Johnny and Dutch take a liking to her.
Khlyen explains to Dav that he brought him to Arkyn to turn him into a Level 6, so that he could return to Dutch and "protect" her. Dav points out the creepy-daddy vibe Khlyen has with Dutch, and Khlyen threatens to shoot Dav to death if he keeps it up.
Johnny tells Dutch that the way Clara and the shields work is that Clara absorbs the radiation to allow whomever's with her to pass through. It's slowly killing her. But when Clara overhears them talking about Khlyen (bionic hearing), she gets Dutch to tell her the whole story. Seeing that Khlyen is Dutch's Connaver, Clara is all in on messing his shit up, no matter the cost to her. So it's on to Arkyn.
Khlyen explains to Dav that his dreams/hallucinations were actually very old memories, but before Dav can get him to say whose memories they are, Khlyen says the Black Root are coming. He tells Dav to get off of Arkyn with Dutch, and to tell her that he's not on the planet anymore. Lie to her if necessary.
Dutch and Johnny find Dav outside the compound. But once he sees they've also freed fellow killjoy Fancy Lee, Dav shoots him. Gotta make sure he's not already a Level 6. Good news: Fancy doesn't die. Bad news: Fancy is a Level 6. Dav also successfully convinces Dutch that Khlyen is gone.
Johnny and Clara say their goodbyes. He offers to take her to Pawter and help remove her mods, but Clara says the mods ARE her. Ordinarily, Dutch and Johnny would have to take Clara in since there's a warrant for the shield, but they figure the loophole is that the warrant is for the person in possession of the shield. Clara, by Company definition, is too modded up to be a person. So Clara is free to go.
