Marvel's Venom Will Return in Animated Feature From Final Destination Bloodlines Duo

We haven't seen the last of Marvel's favorite Symbiote.

An animated Venom outing is currently in development at Sony from Final Destination Bloodlines directing team Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed.

Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach—all three of whom produced the live-action Venom trilogy starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock and his alien parasite with an appetite for brains—return as producers alongside Hardy and Kelly Marcel.

Marcel, of course, co-wrote the first Venom installment before going solo on Let There Be Carnage and The Last Dance, the latter of which she also directed.

The trio of comic book-inspired projects that co-starred Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Woody Harrelson, Naomi Harris, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rhys Ifans, Stephen Graham, and Juno Temple grossed over $1 billion worldwide (in spite of less-than-stellar reviews). The big screen depiction of the Lethal Protector also gained the approval of Venom co-creator, Todd McFarlane.

"I only went in [to the first Venom] selfishly for one reason: To see whether he was gonna be big and gnarly," he told SYFY Wire in 2019. "That's how I designed him. He's a monster. And Eddie Brock is buried in there. It's not Eddie Brock [who] turns into a monster; he's a monster that happens to disguise himself as Eddie Brock or whomever. To me, I just wanted to see a big hulking character, which the director, Ruben Fleischer, put on the screen. If you remember Spider-Man 3 when they had Venom, he wasn't very big. I remember sitting in the theater going, 'Ahhh, that can't be it! We're not over yet! He's gotta get bigger, doesn't he? Ahhh, darn it!'"

While no screenwriter is currently attached to the animated interpretation of the iconic villain-turned-antihero, Sony Pictures Animation is kicking off  "a writers' room to develop the a script or takes," according to THR. In any case, this new direction jives nicely with the studio's incredible success from the Oscar winning Spider-Verse franchise centered around Miles Morales.

Lipvosky and Stein made their feature debut with the X-Men-esque Freaks in 2018 before directing their talents toward a live-action Kim Possible movie for Disney Channel a year later. But it was their spin on Final Destination—which received the highest box office gross of the entire series—that kickstarted the duo's career into maximum overdrive.

Since the release of Bloodlines last spring, the filmmakers found themselves tapped to co-write the long-awaited Gremlins 3 with director Chris Columbus for Warner Bros. Pictures and Amblin. Lipvosky and Stein's partnership with Steven Spielberg's legendary production company extends to an original project at Universal entitled Long Lost. Adapted by Colin Bannon from his own short story, the latter is described as a cross between What Lies Beneath and Rosemary's Baby. And then there's The Traveler, an adaptation of Joseph Eckert's forthcoming sci-fi novel, which landed at Paramount Skydance early last year.

“When you’re trying to be a director, it’s a roller coaster, an uphill climb,” Stein told Deadline in a 2025 interview that also confirmed a Freaks sequel, which quietly wrapped production some time last year.

Concluded Lipovsky: “All the movies we’re looking at are horror, sci-fi, fantasy, all in that space, which is everything that we love. "But we want to do something new with it that will surprise people."
