Celebrated filmmaker Steven Spielberg sets the stage for an all-new close encounter (one full of crop circles and government conspiracies) in the teaser trailer for his mysterious science fiction movie—officially titled Disclosure Day.

While there is no extensive plot synopsis at this time, the footage teases a story about a meteorologist (Oppenheimer's Emily Blunt) working to expose the truth about life beyond our planet following a strange television broadcast during which extra-terrestrials appear to speak through her. The trailer hints at a balance between awe-inspiring wonder and just a smidge of underlying dread.

In other words, a conglomeration of the director's most iconic alien efforts: Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), E.T. (1982), and War of the Worlds (2005). "If you found out we weren’t alone, if someone showed you, proved it to you, would that frighten you?" reads the initial logline provided by Universal Pictures. "This summer, the truth belongs to seven billion people. We are coming close to … Disclosure Day."

Josh O’Connor (Wake Up Dead Man), Colin Firth (Kingsman), Eve Hewson (The Perfect Couple), and Colman Domingo (Sing Sing) co-star.

Longtime Spielberg collaborator David Koepp (Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull) penned the screenplay based on an original story from the Oscar-winning director.

"What he does so brilliantly is he combines a vast spectacle with really honest human emotion—unlike, I think, any other director. It's a very emotional experience, this movie," Koepp told Deadline in June 2025. "[Steven] wrote it up in a treatment, 40 or 50 pages, said, 'Read this and tell me what you think.' So I did and I said, 'I think it's great. I would do this and move that.' Then we started the process. So he came up and wrote the whole story, and I wrote the script. But he was constantly involved in the script, changing lines and things [like that]. He was the most involved on this as he's been on any movie I've written for him to direct."

Universal is clearly aiming to drum up viral momentum for the project (Spielberg's first overt genre outing since 2018's Ready Player One), which received a number of animatic billboards across the country in New York, California, and Texas.

When does Disclosure Day come out?

Disclosure Day will make contact with theaters everywhere on June 6, 2026.

In addition to directing, Spielberg is also a producer on the movie (via his iconic Amblin Entertainment banner) alongside Kristie Macosko Krieger. Adam Somner and Chris Brigham are executive producers.
