Phil Lord and Chris Miller Give Update On Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse
The third animated outing for Miles Morales and the rest of the Spider-Verse crew is still in production ahead of its planned June 2027 release date.
It's been nearly three whole years since Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse swung into theaters, and fans of Sony's Oscar-winning Marvel franchise have started to wonder if the long-delayed third animated installment is in the cards for Miles Morales.
Well, the good news is this: Beyond the Spider-Verse is still in production ahead of its planned June 18, 2027 release date. The bad news? We'll have to wait a little longer for the bugs—or arachnids, in this case—to be worked out.
Aside from the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike throwing a wrench into the gears of all major Hollywood productions, the delay in getting the sequel out really comes down to writer-producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller wanting the next chapter (directed by Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson) to live up to the immaculate quality of its predecessors. To do that, however, they and their talented team at Sony Pictures Animation need to find out what doesn't work in order to deliver the best movie possible.

“Having to take it apart to put it back together again was really, really [the] real thing that made it take longer,” Miller recently explained to i09 as the filmmaking team hit the press circuit on behalf of Project Hail Mary.
But don't worry, they are very much feeling the widespread scrutiny and growing impatience from fans who want to see how Miles's story will end. You may recall how we last saw him defying the Spider-Society by setting off to prevent his father's supposedly mandatory "canon event" death, only to find himself trapped in a reality where he became the Prowler.
“We put the most pressure on ourselves,” Miller said. “There’s no one that puts more pressure on us than ourselves, wanting to outdo ourselves each time and see things that you haven’t seen before and make it feel like something you’ve never experienced before. And so, trying to get something that is as worthy as the previous two has been the driver.”
Added Lord: “The main trick is to play free. And to have the whole team understand that their job is to try stuff. To make mistakes, to see where this could go. And I can report that they’re going hard. It’s so great.”
In addition to Project Hail Mary (in theaters March 20), Lord and Miller are also gearing up for the debut of the live-action Spider-Man Noir television series, which sees the return of Nicolas Cage as the titular, hardboiled web-slinger.
