Stranger Things Season 5: Nell Fisher Details Joining Cast as Holly Wheeler [Exclusive]
Stranger Things star Nell Fisher detailed joining the season five cast as Holly Wheeler to SYFY Wire at the Los Angeles red carpet premiere. Another ensemble addition— “Delightful Derek” himself, Jake Connelly—also shared his experience helping the Hawkins crew bid farewell to their decade-long journey on the Netflix series. Vol. 1 episodes are streaming now, ahead of Vol. 2’s Dec. 25 premiere and the series finale dropping on New Years Eve.
Stranger Things is wrapping up with some new faces.
Nell Fisher was added to the season five cast as Mike Wheeler’s (Finn Wolfhard) little sister, Holly Wheeler, whose screen presence exploded across Vol. 1 episodes compared to past seasons (and following portrayals from twins Anniston and Tinsley Price).
“The thing about Stranger Things is it really is about love,” the 14-year-old actress explained to SYFY at the Nov. 6 series finale premiere in Los Angeles. “It's platonic love. Romantic love. Love in a community. Love between a father and daughter. I think it's really important to have that kind of relationship with the people you're filming with.”
The Evil Dead Rise star, indeed, found herself embraced by the Netflix show’s core ensemble.
“It's incredible,” Fisher said. “It was such an honor being able to join the cast and to be part of the end of what's been a really, really long road.”
Fisher hit the ground running up a pretty story-packed hill, as her upside down guide Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink) might put it.
Creators Ross Duffer and Matt Duffer immediately put Fisher’s Holly in the thick of it, having her enveloped in the web of Vecna’s alter ego Mr. Whatisit (Jamie Cambell Bower), before watching parents Karen Wheeler (Cara Buono) and Ted Wheeler (Joe Chrest) barely survive a demogorgon attack.
And Fisher was ready to tackle whatever the sibling auteurs had planned for the youngest Wheeler, who even landed her own eponymous episode title, “Chapter Two: The Vanishing of Holly Wheeler.”
“The Duffer brothers are so talented,” she said. “They created such a wonderful world.”
Alongside Fisher, the new kids club also included Jake Connelly, a.k.a. “Delightful” Derek Turnbow, an unlikely hero by the end of “Chapter Four: Sorcerer.”
In contrast to his blunt and quick-to-curse character, the season’s 13-year-old breakout star can sum up his time behind the scenes without Derek’s trademark four-letter words.
“Seeing a great show like this come to an end, it's so bittersweet,” Connelly told SYFY at the premiere. “It's like summer camp. Seeing those friends you'll never see again. It's just so sad saying goodbye.”
Vol. 1 of Stranger Things is streaming now, ahead of the Hawkins crew’s final adventure playing out across Vol. 2 on Dec. 25 and the series finale on New Year’s Eve.
