Supergirl Director Teases “Anti-Hero Story” For Milly Alcock DC Film
Starring House of the Dragon alum Milly Alcock, DC Universe film Supergirl officially soars into theaters on June 26, 2026.
Kara Zor-El doesn't fit the typical superhero mold.
That rings particularly true for Milly Alcock's take on the character in the upcoming Supergirl film—soaring on the big screen June 2026. Based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely's Woman of Tomorrow storyline, the second theatrical entry in James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Universe finds the titular character hesitantly embarking "on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice," per the official synopsis.
As established at the end of Gunn's Superman, Kara is a party girl (and Krypto's true owner) who frequents planets with red suns in order to get drunk and drown out the trauma of witnessing the destruction of Krypton. She's a bit of a mess, placing her own hedonistic tendencies over everything else. Why bother being noble when the cosmos is such a cruel and apathetic place?
Supergirl director teases "anti-hero" story in Kara Zor-El's DC Universe film
“This is really an anti-hero story," director Craig Gillespie teased at a Dec. 7 event in New York City (via The Hollywood Reporter). "She’s got a lot of demons, a lot of baggage coming into this, which is very different from where Superman is in his life."
Gunn chimed in: "So many times female superheroes are so perfect. She’s not that at all. Like male superheroes have been allowed to be for a while."
Written by Ana Nogueira, Supergirl co-stars Matthias Schoenaerts (Krem of the Yellow Hills); Eve Ridley (Ruthye Marye Knoll); Jason Momoa (Lobo); and David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham as Kara's deceased parents.
A triple threat actress, screenwriter, and playwright, Nogueira is perhaps best-known for her roles as Penny Ares on The Vampire Diaries, Kay Costa on The Michael J. Fox Show, and Eliza Hamilton in the original Vassar Workshop iteration of Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton.
Beyond Supergirl, she is also penning scripts for projects centered around Wonder Woman and the Teen Titans.
Gillespie, on the other hand, boasts a collection of films across various genres—including Lars and the Real Girl, I, Tonya, Cruella, Dumb Money, Million Dollar Arm, The Finest Hours, and the 2011 remake of Fright Night.
