Scarlett is having a … rough time this week. She’s been stuck on the island with no way off for over three weeks and isn’t having any luck getting herself to the mainland where she can actually help her sister. So, naturally, she’s gone a little “Cast Away”. Luckily, though, things are changing, and she manages to locate a life raft just as she’s nearly at the end of her rope.
Back on dry land, Scarlett has no trouble finding Axel who is taking the truck out for a ride. They have a very sweet reunion during which Axel tells her that you really can’t go home again before setting out on the road to find Vanessa.
On the road to Loveland, Flesh and Jolene make an inadvertent prison break when one of their fellow inmates shoots up the bus and causes a crash. They manage to make it through the woods to an abandoned house, but they’re still chained together and can’t get too far on foot.
Scarlett and Axel get into their own gunfight when they run into some Daywalkers after the truck breaks down. Axel picks up a shotgun, but ends up badly injured when the blowback strikes him directly in the face. Scarlett drags the injured Axel to a nearby camp whose sole inhabitant offers to treat his injuries and shelter them while he recovers.
Flesh and Jolene, unable to break the chain holding them together, settle in to wait out the search parties. They get to talking, as everyone does, and each learns a bit more about the other’s personal life. Jolene loves Doc, but knows there’s hesitation there. Flesh actually wanted to make it to Loveland to see his wife but is certain she won’t forgive him. Jolene suggests he should start by forgiving himself first.
While Axel recuperates, Scarlett has her own heart to heart with their new friend, Simon. Simon is a religious man who believes everything that has happened and will happen is all part of God’s plan. Scarlett is not so keen on that idea, since a massive apocalypse where nearly everyone she loves dies doesn’t seem like the work of a benevolent God.
Flesh and Jolene, meanwhile, see their luck run out … or maybe just turn around? One of the guards finally makes his way to the house they’re squatting in with a shoot-to-kill order. With no other option, they jump the guard, knocking him out and stealing his gun, but refusing to kill him.
Instead of getting better, Axel spikes a fever, which means he has an infection and needs antibiotics. Simon and Scarlett take him along as they find an abandoned ambulance with the drugs inside. Axel is pretty sure he won’t be able to go with Scarlett the rest of the way and asks if she’s prepared to kill Vanessa should she succumb to the darkness. Scarlett doesn’t answer.
Before they’re able to get back to Simon’s camp, a horde of Daywalkers begins marching directly toward them. Scarlett wants to run or fight, but Simon convinces her to remain still, not engage. She does, and the group passes right by them without incident.
Despite making it back in one piece, Axel doesn’t get better. Instead, he gets worse, and Simon tells Scarlett there’s a very real chance he won’t make it. Scarlett refuses to hear him, but Axel is pretty sure he’s correct. He tells Scarlett that he found and lost his sister and that she should go on without him so she doesn’t lose hers too. He may still be there when she returns.
Van Helsings, though, are a stubborn bunch. Scarlett refuses to give up on Axel without taking one last shot. She finds a Daywalker injured and drags him back to the camp, forcing him to bite Axel even though Axel tastes terrible to him. After, Simon convinces her to let the vampire go, which she does, and Axel wakes up, good as new.
Finally separated but still in dire straits, Flesh and Jolene encounter one last guard. He manages to shoot them, but Flesh takes all the bullets. But since he can’t die. They get up, kill the guard, and steal a vehicle. Jolene agrees to help him find his wife if he helps her get back to Sara.
Scarlett and Axel finally say their goodbyes to Simon and head off to hopefully help Vanessa and her final confrontation, but they don’t leave empty handed, so to speak. Scarlett is starting to see the merits in having a little faith and even thinks Simon might be more than a normal human. Of course, your eyes have a way of playing tricks on you.
