The severed-hand-pulled-into-mud gag was achieved by burying a pipe underneath the mud to act as a conduit around which the steel cable tied to the fake hand could loop. When the director yelled "action", a special effects artist off screen would pull the cable, and the hand would sink into the mud (it took a few tries).
