Dark Matter: Three Things You Should Know

Dark Matter follows the adventures of the six-person crew of a derelict spaceship as they awaken from stasis in the middle of Nowhere, Outer Space. Their memories wiped clean, they have no memory of who they are or how they got on board, naming themselves based on the order in which they were awakened (One, Two, Three, Four, Five and Six). The only clues as to their identities — and mission — is a cargo bay full of guns and the ship's destination: a remote mining colony. So just what in the heck is going on?

You'll find out tonight as the first season of Dark Matter premieres on Syfy. Until then, here are three things you should know before jumping aboard.

1. It Comes From the Stargate Guys

   Dark Matter creators Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie are no stranger to science fiction, as they were the executive producers and head writers on every Stargate series to date. For the record, that includes Stargate: SG-1 (ten seasons, 1997-2007); Stargate Atlantis (five seasons, 2004-2009); and SGU Stargate Universe (two seasons, 2009-2011).
    
2. It's Based on a Comic Book Series …
   
   
   
   
   
   … that was meant to be a TV show. The concept for Dark Matter was originally intended for television but was published by Dark Horse Comics with art by Garry Brown. The four-issue series, written by Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie, had its original run from January-April 2012; Syfy announced the television adaptation in October 2014. All it took was a little time for Dark Matter to blast off to the small screen!
    
3. The Cast Knows Syfy
   
   If some of the cast members look familiar to Syfy fans, it's because those cast members are no strangers to Syfy.
   
   Marc Bendavid, who plays One, played the villainous Scott Brandon in the first season of Bitten.
   
   
   
   
   
   Anthony Lemke, who plays Three, played Ryan Lambert in the second season of Lost Girl. He also appeared in "Queen for a Day," a third season episode of Warehouse 13.
   
   
   
   
   
   Jodelle Ferland, who plays Five, appeared as Harmony in the Stargate Atlantis Season 5 episode named after her character.
   
   
   
   
   
   Roger Cross, who plays Six, has quite the impressive Syfy resume. He appeared as Travis Verta in Continuum, Major William Shaw in Eureka and Captain Walker in Taken.
   
   
   
   
   
   And you definitely know Zoie Palmer, who plays The Android. She plays Lauren in Lost Girl.
