"Holy mackerel! What a show!" exclaims Carl Denham when he sees the natives of Skull Island dancing and ritual-izing about in King Kong (1933).
The same line could be applied to the semi-finals of Face Off Season 10, in which the artists were charged with creating evolved prehistoric creatures that could be found on Kong's home turf. Everyone delivered pretty stellar work ... though only three out of the four artists earned a spot in the two-part finale. Let's see what went down ...
Season 10, Episode 12: "Skull Island: Reign of Kong"
Top Looks (Judges):
Rob (V. Rex/Vastatosaurus)
Our Top Looks:
- Mel (Decarnocimex)
Mel was eliminated, but her evolved insect creature was our favorite of the bunch. Maybe because we have such, er, strong memories of the 'bug scene' in Peter Jackson's King Kong (2005) ... gross!
Awesome sculpting and coloring, with features that suggest wit and wisdom ("You're some kinda big, fat, smart bug, aren't you?" to quote Starship Troopers).
The hood-like cowl work only adds to the sense of intelligence. This is some sort of mentor/shaman bug that sadly shakes its head whenever Kong fights a T. Rex.
You always get bonus points for doing a tail!
We'll miss you, Mel! Though we have a feeling we haven't seen the last of you ... ;)
- Melissa (Arachno-Claw/Arachnocidis)
The winner of the challenge -- and the first person chosen for the finale -- was Melissa. Her crab-thing was definitely the most Skull Island-esque of the evening's creations.
Mmm ... pass the melted butter! (Just kidding. Gross.)
Delicious. (Just kidding. Gross.)
Oh yeah, the winner of this challenge also received an all-expense paid trip to Universal Studios Orlando. Have fun at the Skull Island: Reign of Kong attraction, Melissa!
Next Week: Season 10, Episode 13: "Sinister Showdown Part 1."
