After his West End debut as Jesus in Godspell, Anthony went on to star in many acclaimed stage productions with roles as diverse as Absalom in Peter Shaffer’s Yonadab, Freddy Trumper in Chess and Frank ‘n’ Furter in The Rocky Horror Show. His career exploded on television, with guest leading roles in many TV series throughout the late '70s and '80s including Secret Army, Enemy at the Door, Love in a Cold Climate and Howard’s Way.

His career exploded on television, with guest leading roles in many TV series throughout the late '70s and '80s including Secret Army, Enemy at the Door, Love in a Cold Climate and Howard’s Way.

His first forays into American television included a guest appearance on NYPD Blue and one season of the ground breaking Fox series, VR5. A year later he won the role of Rupert Giles in Buffy The Vampire Slayer. He also appeared in Him and Us, directed by Charles Shyer and the US version of Free Agents for NBC.

Back in the UK, Anthony starred in programs such as Manchild, Persuasion, Free Agents, Merlin (which also aired on Syfy), You, Me and Them and Little Britain, while continuing to guest star in notable dramas like Spooks, Reversals and New Tricks.

On screen, Anthony was seen alongside Meryl Streep in The Iron Lady, The Inbetweeners Movie, Dancing on the Edge and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters.
