Star Wars: Sam Witwer's Darth Maul Returns in Teaser for Shadow Lord Animated Series (WATCH)

If that unrealized Darth Maul setup in Solo: A Star Wars Story left you disappointed, Lucasfilm Animation has just the remedy.

The Dathomirian Sith apprentice turned galactic crime boss famous for his double-sided red lightsaber is back and more lethal than ever in the teaser trailer for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord.

Created by The Clone Wars mastermind and incoming Lucasfilm Co-President Dave Filoni, the animated series coming to Disney+ this spring is described by the streamer as "a pulpy adventure," in which Maul (once again voiced by Sam Witwer) attempts to rebuild his criminal empire on a planet untouched by the Empire. "There," continues the synopsis, "he crosses paths with a disillusioned young Jedi Padawan who could be the apprentice he is seeking to aid him in his relentless pursuit for revenge."

In addition to Witwer—who has voiced Maul for well over a decade now—the cast also includes Gideon Adlon as Devon Izara, Oscar nominee Wagner Moura as Brander Lawson, Richard Ayoade as Two-Boots, Dennis Haysbert as Master Eeko-Dio-Daki, Chris Diamantopoulos as Looti Vario, Charlie Bushnell as Rylee Lawson, Vanessa Marshall as Rook Kast, David C. Collins as Spybot, A.J. LoCascio as Marrok, and Steve Blum as Icarus.

While Maul made his Star Wars debut in The Phantom Menace, the character didn't really come into his own until The Clone Wars, which revealed that Palpatine's underling had survived being sliced in half by Obi-Wan Kenobi during the battle on Naboo.

"This guy has always had aspects of being the puppet master," Witwer recently said during an interview with Rotten Tomatoes. "There's a 15-year stretch of history where we don't know what he was up to. So, we're starting to explore that. I've always felt that the character had potential for all kinds of things. I remember when we were working on Clone Wars ... I would come up with certain ideas that I'd throw out to Dave ... And he would say on more than one occasion, 'Well, it's a great idea, Sam, but this isn't Maul's show. You can't really take the time for that kind of detail when it's not Maul's perceptive.'"

He continued: "Little did I know, he was thinking long-term that this character had potential as a point-of-view character ... Maul's point-of-view, as you'd imagine, is twisted. He's still a nasty guy, but we still get to ask certain fun questions. Now that the Empire has arrived, what does he think of it? Is this what he expected? Is this what he signed up for? The Jedi are gone—what does he think of them? Has his opinion changed? This is a world in which Obi-Wan Kenobi is likely dead, according to Maul. How does Maul train an apprentice? Not the Sith, but how does Maul train an apprentice? We get to ask some very interesting questions. I have some answers, but I can't tell you."

Filoni and Matt Michnovetz developed Shadow Lord together, with both serving as executive producers alongside Athena Yvette Portillo, Carrie Beck, Josh Rimes, and supervising director Brad Rau. Alex Spotswood is a co-executive producer.
