WATCH: Sonequa Martin Green and Alex Kurtzman on bringing Spock to Star Trek: Discovery

By Courtney Enlow

The upcoming second season of Star Trek: Discovery is going to be a bit of a family reunion for Sonequa Martin Green’s Michael Burnham. Ethan Peck is portraying a young version of Michael’s adoptive brother, Spock, and no one is more excited about this turn of events than Green herself. Ahead of next week’s Season 2 premiere, Green shared her enthusiasm for Discovery’s new brother-and-sister dynamic with SYFY WIRE.

“We’re brother and sister, right? That’s what’s on the page, that’s the story, and that’s what we created around,” said Green. “Ethan is so awesome and such a brilliant actor, but also such a brilliant person. He brings everything that he has to it, every fiber of his being. He’s put his whole soul into this, he knows how important this is. He knows what it means, he knows it’s a monumental role in a monumental moment. He gives it all the weight it deserves. And then he’s just a joy to be around as well.”

Discovery co-creator and showrunner Alex Kurtzman also shared his thoughts on what it means for the show to introduce Spock, as well as Captain Pike, this season.

“Of course, there’s always trepidation. And at the same time, you can’t let the fear stop you from telling a great story,” noted Kurtzman. “Because we mentioned that [Michael] and Spock are [siblings], I think the audience would ultimately feel disappointed and a little angry if we didn’t explain how and why that happened, and what that relationship is about.”

Additionally, Green touched upon Michael’s ongoing growth as a person and a Starfleet officer, as well as her emotional journey. For more Star Trek: Discovery intel, you can watch the entire video ahead of the show’s return to CBS All Access on Thursday, Jan 17.
