Library Penny introduces Derek to some other stories. For example, Kady. Back when the team was working to pull blood from a stone, Kady was not around. Turns out, she was working on solving some of her alter ego Sam Cunningham's cases. And, dealing with a new problem.
Kady quickly pays The Babayaga one of the three magical items she's demanding, and has two days to get the remaining ones. She heads to find a source for help, and is greeted by Pete, Marina's old friend. He agrees to help her for a chance to meet The Babayaga.
Back to Zelda. Alice's book has her abandoning magic and moving to Portland. When Zelda and a coworker head to the scene to confirm her whereabouts, she is not there. Which Zelda does NOT tell her colleague, and instead maintains the lie. Hmmm…
Pete directs Kady to the black market, where she finds lots of hedge witches ready to make trades. She upgrades her goods until she finally has something to use to get the Bag of Holding that The Babayaga requires.
Then Pete's friend Gordie directs Kady to his friend Duke's house. He's got the last item she needs. Since he's dead on the floor, they take the doll that cries tears. Yikes! And then Pete grabs a Dewey out of the dead guy's pocket. Gross.
Library Penny introduces Fen's story. Turns out that she's been having some weird, prophetic dreams back when the magical animals stopped talking. She tells Josh about it and he has some advice on how to interrupt and control her own dreams.
Mixing drinks and prepping to meet The Babayaga, Pete suddenly collapses. Kady calls his veterinarian friend Gordie over who gives him a look. His guess? There is a spell interfering with his hedge witch enchantments that's making him sick. Kady thinks it's something on the Dewey and that the library is to blame.
In Library HQ, Penny and Derek get back into Fen's story. Her latest prophetic dream shows the antidote for the talking animals resulting in the fiery death of the lizard. Fen takes control of the dream and chases a strange figure. When she wakes up, she rushes to Margo and Co. and stops them from trying the antidote on the lizard.
Kady helps Pete heal and pays off The Babayaga while he's recovering. When he wakes up, she asks him to call his hedge friends together. She wants everyone to know about what The Library is doing with the trackers on the Deweys -- and to band together. It's revolution time.
Back at the library, Zelda has been having ongoing visions about her daughter Harriet being trapped in the mirror realm. She convinces a very reluctant fellow librarian to help her open a door to the realm to look for her. Inside she finds a twisted, terrifying world and ghosts of Harriet.
Zelda makes it back to The Library, and quickly learns that the Modesto branch library has been attacked. Her boss, Everett, wants them all to keep an eye on magicians and witches everywhere. No matter the cost.
And back in Library HQ, Penny tells Derek that what Zelda, Alice, Kady and Fen are all up to now will change the course of history. They can't be filed away as sidekicks. Then -- TWIST -- Derek congratulations him. Turns out this was a test and Penny passed. Derek is his boss' boss, and Penny's being promoted. His new job: Collecting secrets taken to the grave. Next!
