Warning: If you don't want to know what happened in this episode, don't read this photo recap!
Penny finds himself in the Neitherlands, the “place between the places.” A new friend (Eve) seems friendly enough until she hurls some scary magic at Penny trying to get his magic button. Penny travels to another area of the Neitherlands to get away, but soon sees that there are a bajillion fountains… How’s he going to get back to Earth?!
In order to get home, Penny magics himself into Quentin’s head to send a message to his friends… What he finds there is a nerd-boy’s wet dream. But what’s even more shocking is when Quentin tells him that he hasn’t been gone for 6 hours, he’s been gone for 6 weeks!
Pieces are starting to come together. The gang know WHERE Penny is, but not how to get him back. Alice and Quentin seek advice from Eliot and Margo, but Eliot, in a bit of a drug haze, is in no condition to help anyone out. Luckily, Alice confesses that she may know a traveler who can help them.
When last we saw Julia, she was attempting to make amends for mistakes she made in the past. Now, she’s got a whole team of (cyber) friends to help her on that journey. Today is the day when they all meet face to face for the first time and Julia is shocked when she finds out that one of these witches that she’s been talking to non stop is none other than…
KADY! Who we haven’t seen since she found out her mom had died (kinda Julia’s fault) and she ran away from Brakebills (breaking Penny’s heart). Grab your popcorn, because tension! Drama! Possible lady friendship!
The Quest to rescue Penny from the Neitherlands takes us now to the 'burbs of Chicago, where Alice introduces her... WHY IS THERE AN ORGY GOING ON AT HER PARENTS HOUSE?! Turns out, Alice’s father studies historical magic, hence the magical roman orgy. But it’s Alice’s mom who can hopefully give them the info they are looking for.
After Eliot’s bizarre behavior earlier, Margo thinks it best to take him to the infirmary. The nurse however says Eliot is fine and it is Margo who is in danger of imminent death after engaging in some rituals which are now draining her life force. Let this be a lesson to all of you on the dangers of unprotected… magic.
Ever since Alice’s brother went all niffin, things have been very strained between Alice and her mother, or Stephanie as she prefers to be called. Alice wants to know what happened with her brother, her mom - ahem, Stephanie - has no interest in finding anything out as it won’t bring her son back. Feels abound, and Alice is unable to get any of the info she needs.
Before Julia and Kady can join the rest of their cyber friends to work on a big magic project, they have to level up. Could these two ladies maybe become friends? Or at the very least not kill each other? After some memories are shared and confessions are made it’s starting to look possible!
Penny stumbles into the Library of the Neitherlands, where he meets a very chipper librarian who tells him the library contains the books of every person who has ever lived… including Martin Chatwin, which the librarian gives Penny some pages of before kicking him out. What answers could be in there?!
If Alice’s parents weren’t strange enough, meet Joe: the third in their polyamorous threelationship, complete with adaptable genitalia. While teaching Alice and Quentin a beacon spell that requires that they both climax at the same time, it unleashes some of the new couples feels on jealousy, measuring up, and sexual inadequacy… Super fun.
That thing that was draining Margo’s life force? Wasn’t some sort of magical std like we thought. Apparently, one of Margo’s former lovers was so distraught when she left him, instead of letting her go, he decided to create a golem, or in this case a MarGolem to take her place. Also, she and Eliot have some unresolved feelings about Mike.
Kady and Julia have successfully leveled up. After witnessing their cyber group doing some crazy powerful time magic, Richard confesses that he and the other cyber witches are looking to make miracles happen by finding the source of all magic and summon a GOD.
After having one of those talks where they lay out all their feelings on the table, Alice and Quentin successfully complete the beacon spell that Joe had taught them earlier, allowing Penny to find the portal that would let him get back to Earth. Unfortunately, the portal directs him straight to Alice’s room, mid-sex. Awkward.
