Will There Be a M3GAN 3.0? Allison Williams Sounds Off: "I Have Been Dreaming Of a Third..."
Could M3GAN 3.0 be more than just a dream?
With M3GAN 2.0 just days away from its wide theatrical release (click here for tickets), the public is curious whether the sequel can recapture the critical and box office success of its 2022 predecessor.
Based on the trailers, however, it looks like the horror triumvirate of Universal Pictures, Blumhouse, and Atomic Monster have another winner on their hands with a violent and self-aware follow-up cheekily tipping its cap to Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Like Arnold Schwarzenegger's T-800 meeting its match in Robert Patrick's T-1000, M3GAN (portrayed by a combination of Amie Donald and Jenna Davis) finds herself resurrected with a few nifty upgrades and sent off to defeat a newly-murderous machine dubbed Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno).
“That was not even something that we had explicitly set out to do, but it just felt obvious to [writer director, and executive producer] Gerard [Johnstone] that if there’s a second doll, then we are going to be in that genre now,” M3GAN 2.0 star and producer Allison Williams (Gemma) said during a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
“There’s this meta humor to the idea of Gemma suddenly being in an action movie. It’s ridiculous in a hopefully fun way, and we had a lot of fun finding the humor in the mere fact of it.”
There's nothing we don't love about that premise, and if audiences respond well enough, there's no telling where the franchise can go from here, though it is often frowned upon in Hollywood — and borderline bad juju — to talk sequels before a movie has even opened.
Will there be a third M3GAN movie?
"We don’t want to presume anything, but I would say [there is] a lot [of forethought]," Williams told THR with a laugh. "That’s all I’m going to say. We love to dream; that’s why we’re all in this business. We have big aspirations of big dreams, and I certainly don’t feel like I’m done making these movies with these people and this tonal landscape and the subject matter. So, yeah, I have been dreaming of a third, for sure."
Even with no word on a third entry just yet, fans still have the spinoff project, SOULM8TE, to look forward to.
Announced last summer, the erotic thriller, written and directed by Kate Dolan (You Are Not My Mother), centers around a grieving man who acquires an android to cope with the recent death of his wife. But as you might expect, this artificially intelligent companion ends up being less Scarlett Johansson in Her and more Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction.
When does M3GAN 2.0 come out?
Tickets are now on sale for M3GAN 2.0, which exclusively hits the big screen this Friday, June 27.
Both the PG-13 and unrated cuts of M3GAN are now available to rent and/or purchase from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.
