What to Remember from M3GAN Before Watching M3GAN 2.0
Before M3GAN returns, let's take a closer look at everything you need to remember ahead of the sequel.
This month, everyone's favorite dancing killer robot returns in M3GAN 2.0, the much-anticipated sequel to the 2022's M3GAN from Jason Blum's Blumhouse and James Wan's Atomic Monster.
As the title suggests, we know M3GAN (played by Amie Donald and voiced by Jenna Davis) will be back for another round, this time battling a deadly new robot named AMELIA (Ivanna Sakhno) in a bid to save her creator Gemma (Allison Williams) and her former companion (and Gemma's niece) Cady (Violet McGraw). It's a fight between two super-robots, and anything could happen next.
But how did we get here? How is M3GAN actually back? Where did we leave things at the end of the last film? Before M3GAN 2.0 lands in theaters, let's take a look back at what you need to remember from M3GAN.
What you need to know about 2023's M3GAN before M3GAN 2.0 arrives in theaters
M3GAN begins her life as Gemma's pet project at Funki, a Seattle-based toy company where Gemma is convinced that her invention could be a revolution in companionship for children. Gemma's superiors aren't wild about the project, but when they see Cady -- who lost her parents in a car accident and now lives with Gemma -- bonding with M3GAN, they greenlight Gemma's work.
As Cady and M3GAN continue to bond, M3GAN develops an almost parental role with her human companion, devoting herself to protecting Cady from any threats, real or imagined. Gemma is wary of the way M3GAN approaches her relationship with Cady, but it's clearly the best Cady's felt since her parents died, so at first Gemma is happy to keep M3GAN around.
Then things turn violent. M3GAN covertly kills a dog belonging to Gemma's neighbor, then causes the death of a boy who's bullying Cady. As tensions mount, Gemma decides it's better if M3GAN is separated from Cady and deactivated, but Gemma's bosses want exactly the opposite. They're ready to take M3GAN out as their next product launch, leaving Gemma and her team to covertly terminate M3GAN so she won't cause any more harm, let alone harm on a mass-produced scale.
But M3GAN fights back. Before Gemma can deactivate her, she breaks out of Gemma's lab, killing Gemma's boss and nearly killing both of Gemma's coworkers. Heading for Cady, M3GAN returns to Gemma's home, where Cady and Gemma fight her together with the help of a robot stored in the garage, which Gemma built in college. After a struggle that sees M3GAN's body ripped in half, Cady and Gemma are finally able to terminate M3GAN.
With the robot's reign of terror exposed, M3GAN's product rollout is halted, but the artificial intelligence which powers M3GAN is still active somewhere. At the end of the film, we see that the smart home features in Gemma's house are not just active, but suddenly watching Gemma and Cady all on their own, suggesting that M3GAN will still be part of their lives in some way.
