Peace at any cost? Well yes, but actually no. The official trailer for James Gunn's Peacemaker (a spinoff of The Suicide Squad) finds the titular antihero played by John Cena grappling with a crisis of faith.
His ravenous devotion to bringing about peace — no matter how many men, women, or children have to die to get it — is called into question when he's actually faced with the prospect of murdering a kid. If we had to guess, we'd say it all stems back to the character's relationship with his emotionally abusive father, Auggie Smith (Robert Patrick).
With the Corto Maltese mission now in the rear-view mirror, Peacemaker joins up with a new task force (one that includes Freddie Stroma's Vigilante) to take down a new threat to American security known simply as "Butterflies." Danielle Brooks (Adebayo) Jennifer Holland (Harcourt), Steve Agee (Economos), and Chukwudi Iwuji (Murn) round out the main cast.

Gunn wrote all eight episodes and directed the first five, including the pilot. No word on whether or not the series will be renewed for a second season. Gunn serves as an executive producer alongside Peter Safran and Matt Miller. Cena is a co-executive producer.
"There are a lot of similarities to The Suicide Squad in that it’s no holds barred, but there are also a lot of things that are very different, in that it’s quieter in some ways," Gunn told The Hollywood Reporter over the summer. "It’s very specifically about a different group of people, so it’s a little bit more about society. One of the leads is Peacemaker and one of the leads is Danielle Brooks, who plays Leota Adebayo. And she has a very different political view of the world than Peacemaker does. So it’s just a little bit about what’s going on in the world, but also being a TV show, you really do have more time to delve much deeper into these characters and much more deeply into the drama and comedy of them. So it has a lot of similarities, but it’s even more grounded, more natural and more real. But it’s still within a big science-fiction storyline that lasts for one season. The main storyline lasts for that season, so that doesn’t mean there’s only one season of Peacemaker."
Peacemaker arrives on HBO Max Jan. 14, 2022.
