Powerpuff Girls getting 'disillusioned 20-somethings' live-action adaptation from Diablo Cody at The CW

The Powerpuff Girls intro

Mojo Jojo beware: The Powerpuff Girls are coming back. Actually, maybe he shouldn't be that worried, because the planned live-action show sees a very different trio of girls than those born from a botched mixture of sugar, spice, everything nice, and Chemical X.

Variety reports that the Cartoon Network classic from Craig McCracken is in development as an all-grown-up live-action series at The CW — from writers Heather Regnier and Diablo Cody no less. Cody, known for her work on JunoJennifer's Body, and Tully, teaming up with Regnier (whose work is predominately genre: Sleepy Hollow, iZombie, Falling Skies) to bring a partnership to the table able to handle both superheroics and angsty young adults.

That's because this version of the heroic sisters are "disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime fighting," bringing a Venture Bros. vibe to the Technicolor original. Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup went through their fair share of drama during the original cartoon, but nothing like this.

The show has not yet been ordered to series, which indicates it's still in a relatively early phase. But, should Regnier and Cody's work move forward, that'll be just one more feather in superproducer Greg Berlanti's cap. The Powerpuff Girls originally ran for 78 episodes and a film, then was rebooted for an additional three seasons.

No word on when the live-action Powerpuff series plans to burst out of Professor Utonium's lab.
