Ruth Bader Ginsburg will uphold the Constitution in Lego Movie 2: The Second Part cameo
If nothing else, the upcoming sequel to The Lego Movie will adhere strictly to the legal confines of the U.S. Constitution.
That's because 85-year-old Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will have a cameo as a black-robed, law-defining minifigure in The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, according to the film's director, Mike Mitchell.
"These movies are so full of surprises. And we were thinking, 'Who’s the last person you would think to see in a Lego film as a minifig?' Ruth Bader Ginsburg!" Mitchell told USA Today. "And we’re all huge fans. It made us laugh to think of having her enter this world."
The Second Part's plot will be driven by an imagination-based feud between a brother and his younger sister in our reality, which was introduced at the end of the first movie in 2014. Ginsburg's appearance comes courtesy of the sister, whose alien-like Duplon toys turn the town of Bricksburg into a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
"We just were trying to think of people who should be immortalized in Lego and who seem fun at weddings," added the film's producers/screenwriters, Phil Lord and Chris Miller. The two have recently been enjoying the massive success of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, a feature they produced for Sony; Lord also co-wrote the script.
In addition to joining an all-star cast of Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Tiffany Haddish, Will Arnett, Alison Brie, and more, Ginsburg is also receiving her own real-world, tie-in minifig that can be purchased by fans of all ages.
"There will be a real Ruth Bader Ginsburg toy that boys and girls can play with. It will even come with a gavel," finished Mitchell.
The Justice recently underwent surgery to remove cancerous (and malignant) growths from her lungs. Thankfully, the procedure went well and she has been recovering at home. Last week, The Washington Post reported that Ginsburg was showing no more signs of cancer and that no further operations were needed.
Felicity Jones (Rogue One) recently played a young version of Ginsburg in On the Basis of Sex, which dramatizes the obstacles she faced in the American legal community as a woman before joining the highest court in the land under President Bill Clinton.
The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part assembles itself in theaters February 8.
