Skywalker family reunion! Natalie Portman extends invitation after Mark Hamill reveals they haven't met

By Jacob Oller

Star Wars family trees are gnarled and messy, but that doesn’t mean they should be ignored. Unless you’re Rey, in which case, ignore away. But the Skywalker clan is different. They’re the premier family of the saga — and some of its closest members haven’t even met. Tragic.

This came to light on Natalie Portman’s birthday. The actress portrayed Padmé aka Queen Amidala aka Momma Skywalker to Luke and Leia in the prequel films, and had her birthday acknowledged in a tongue-in-cheek tweet by Mark Hamill, who played Luke in... all the films:

Wait, what? They’ve NEVER met? That makes sense in the story, sure. Padmé dies of a broken heart (OK, OK, she “lost the will to live” despite being completely healthy, whatever that means) after giving birth to her twins, according to some medical droid. So there’s no reason Hamill would ever be on the same set as Portman. Unless she was a Force ghost... but we digress.

Anyways, Portman found out about the tweet thanks to an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where she extended an invitation to her estranged son:

“It’s such a shame, I would love to meet him. Mark, I would love to meet you, come over!” Portman exclaims. This would mean both Skywalker parents made good with Luke, who had a similarly tough run of things. They could bond over what a jerk Anakin became and how some toxic Star Wars fans can be the worst. Or they could cut a rap album, building off of Portman’s Lonely Island expertise — at least do a quick digital SNL sketch where they lay down a track. This is a free viral idea, Lorne Michaels. Make this family reunion one to remember.
