The Suicide Squad is about a year away from release, but the cast is doing a good job of getting us excited for James Gunn's soft reboot of Task Force X on the big screen. Answering fan questions during DC FanDome's second day, the project's A-list ensemble teased a number of big sequences and appearances for the film.

"There are a lot of new characters that you're gonna see featured that have not been seen onscreen before," said Margot Robbie ("Harley Quinn") when asked about surprise cameos. "I won't spoil it for you, but yes, there are a lot of new characters and a lot of great actors that you'll see onscreen."

Elsewhere, Jai Courtney hinted at a bigger role for Captain Boomerang and his pink plush unicorn, Pinky. "Will we be seeing more of him? Well, some things you just can't reveal, because they're so integral to the story that I wouldn't want to give something away," the actor said. "Fingers crossed, I certainly hope we see more of Boomerang and Pinky as well."

In terms of action sequences, Joel Kinnaman ("Rick Flagg") said that certain scenes took several weeks to film. "They're massive sequences with big war-like scenarios with explosions and helicopters crashing and running across a beach where guns are firing and people are dying and arms are flying off peoples' bodies," he explained. "It's absolute chaos onscreen."

Peter Capaldi, who is playing The Thinker, recalled a rain-heavy sequence that took about three days to shoot with the entire Squad. "I'm Scottish, so I've spent a lot of my life in the rain, but this was Hollywood rain. It came from way, way up there in these magic rain machines," he said. "James would play really cool music real loudly while we were doing it, and you couldn't help but feel as if you were in a big superhero movie."

Robbie copped to "an insane sequence that Harley Quinn does" halfway through the film. "[It] was one of the difficult things I've ever shot onscreen," the actress said. "We shot in like four days, and I remember looking at the schedule and being like, 'Oh my god, we're not gonna be able to do this. This is gonna be impossible.' And we did it, but it was hard and I was really beat up by the end of it. James was actually texting me before and said, 'That scene looks amazing.' That whole sequence apparently looks really cool. When you see the movie, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about."

Gunn, who both wrote and directed the movie, admitted that he drew on the original Suicide Squad comics by John Ostrander, as well as classic '60s-era "caper war films" like The Dirty Dozen, Where Eagles Dare, and Kelly's Heroes. "It's an epic war film where these characters are trying to complete this very dangerous mission — they just happen to be these sort of loser and scumbag supervillains," Gunn said.

The filmmaker is one of the rare Hollywood directors to have dipped his toe in both the MCU and DECU. Once he's done with DC's ragtag group of bad guys, he'll be returning to Marvel Studios to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

The Suicide Squad will begin its deadly mission in theaters everywhere on Aug. 6, 2021.

The film also stars Violas Davis ("Amanda Waller"), John Cena ("Peacemaker"), Nathan Fillion ("T.D.K."), Taika Waititi (his role is TBD), Pete Davidson ("Blackguard"), David Dastmalchian ("Polka-Dot Man"), Alice Braga ("Sol Soria"), Storm Reid ("Tyla DuBois"), Sean Gunn ("Weasel"), Steve Agee ("King Shark"), Michael Rooker ("Savant"), Daniela Melchior ("Ratcatcher 2"), and Flula Borg ("Javelin").
