WATCH: SYFY WIRE Blast on the 2019 genre Oscar nominees

By Jackie Jennings

Nominations for the 2019 Oscars were announced this week, and it was a welcome sight to see quite a few genre films on the list. That’s why we just had to discuss the most exciting things about the announcement in this SYFY WIRE Blast weekend edition.

Jackie Jennings is joined by Casey Jost from Impractical Jokers this weekend to talk about these nominations. Jackie kicked things off with the biggest news: Black Panther’s nomination for Best Picture. The Marvel film became the first superhero movie ever nominated in the category. The Best Animated Feature category was also home to lots of genre nominees. Incredibles 2, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and Ralph Breaks the Internet all earned nominations, though Casey thinks Into the Spider-Verse could have been a contender for Best Picture this year.

Jackie and Casey also discussed some surprises beyond the nominees, like the lack of a Best Director nomination for Black Panther’s Ryan Coogler and how A Quiet Place somehow only received one nomination. Casey also offers some convincing evidence that maybe A Star Is Born is in fact a sci-fi film after all!
