5 human/monster sex scenes that take The Shape of Water to the next level

By Alyse Wax

Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water won Best Picture at this year's Academy Awards, which makes it special in several ways. It is one of the few genre films to ever win this award, but its win also revealed that the Academy has no issues with a sex scene between a human woman and a fish-man.

In honor of The Shape of Water, we've pulled together a list of some of our other favorite human-monster couplings. For the most part, these aren't Academy Award-worthy films — but they are the perfect movies for a night in with pizza and beer.

Some of these may need more beer than others.

WARNING: Some graphic content ahead ...

01. La Bête (1975)

Commonly (and inaccurately) described as an erotic Beauty and the Beast, the only similarity between it and La Bête seems to be that there are a beauty and a beast. After the death of her father, a young woman must marry a man she has never met in order to earn her inheritance. Much of the film is a farce — then it turns dark. It's unclear if the resulting scene is a dream, a flashback, or real life, but the sexually frustrated woman ends up running through the forest until she finds the Beast, and they have wild, graphic sex.

02. Tanya's Island (1980)

A love triangle between a model, a misogynistic painter, and a Sasquatch. Nowadays, that would be an Amazon bestseller, but in the 1980s, that was a typical no-budget, no-profit grind house flick. Vanity (one-time Prince protégé) plays the titular Tanya who tries to escape her abusive boyfriend, Lobo, and finds a gentle, human-like sasquatch to fight for her honor — and screw her brains out.

03. Species (1995)

Sexy alien Sil, played by Natasha Henstridge, is desperately seeking a human to mate with for the continuation of her species. Scientists are desperately seeking Sil to prevent that from happening. In the first film, Sil finally finds someone to mate with. The scene switches between Sil in her attractive human form and her scarier, slimier alien visage.

04. Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV (2000)

I don't know if Toxie truly counts as a monster, but he's pretty close. When a janitor falls into a drum of toxic waste he gains superhuman strength but is grossly deformed, thus becoming the Toxic Avenger. In the fourth film in the franchise, Toxie has quick, comical sex with his blind wife, Sarah, in order to impregnate her. It ends with him vomiting green goo all over her chest. Romantic.

05. Splice (2009)

Vincenzo Natali's Splice focuses on a couple of scientists, Clive and Elsa, who create a human/animal hybrid in the name of science. The creature, Dren, matures rapidly and has a mixture of different animal traits, including wings, a tail, and amphibious tendencies. Clive begins a romantic relationship with her, and it makes her wings unfurl.
