All the genre TV and movies coming to streaming in September 2020

From deranged superheroes, pint-sized detectives and killer babysitters, this month's streaming lineup has it all. As we inch toward the fall television season, streaming is here to fill the gap with a ton of new and inventive originals.

Arguably one of the biggest drops this month will be Season 2 of The Boys, the twisted and bloody drama on Amazon Prime. Season 1 turned the show into a critical and cult hit, and Year 2 is already scoring a ton of whale-crashing buzz. Disney+ is also trying out its new premium VOD options with the streaming debut of Mulan, which will be available on the service for an additional $29.99. Hulu also has a new original with the series Woke about an African-American cartoonist who starts communicating with inanimate objects after a life-changing turn of fate.

Netflix is bringing a whole lot of originals for the month, led by the bloody new sequel The Babysitter: Killer Queen, about a teenager trying to survive an attack from a freshly resurrected gang of killer teen cultists. The first film, also a Netflix original, was a ton of fun. The OG super-streamer is also debuting the new original series Away, starring Hilary Swank as an astronaut sent on a lengthy mission. The new original film Enola Holmes, starring Millie Bobby Brown and Henry Cavill, also debuts this month. Animated series Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous is also out for some family-friendly dino adventures.

HIGHLIGHTS

Away (Netflix Original Series): A fresh, sci-fi Netflix original series aims to send Hilary Swank to space. The 10-episode first season looks to be equal parts space-y and family drama, as Swank’s astronaut leaves behind her family and teenage daughter when she takes off on a three-year mission.

The Babysitter: Killer Queen (Netflix Film): Need a bit of sexy, murderous intrigue to wrap up the summer? This should do the trick. The sequel to McG’s horror-comedy-thriller The Babysitter brings back some cast members like Judah Lewis, Robbie Amell and Bella Thorne, and tells a fresh story following the same boy who survived the first film’s wild horror ride. The first film was a horror-comedy throwback, and a ton of fun, so here’s hoping Part 2 keeps it rolling.

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous (Netflix Original Series): The Jurassic World franchise takes an animated turn, following some kids who are enjoying a summer camp at the park when all hell (umm, dinos?) break loose. It looks to ride that line of kid-friendly and still generally exciting, and could be a fun, family-friendly adventure.

Enola Holmes (Netflix Film): Originally eyed for a theatrical release, this one shifted to Netflix in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic. The A-list mystery tale follows Stranger Things alum Millie Bobby Brown as the young sister of the legendary detective, as she takes on a case all her own. The supporting cast includes Henry Cavill (Man of Steel) as Sherlock himself, but even with some stars around her, this is Enola's story.

HIGHLIGHTS

Woke: Complete Season 1: A new high-concept series from Hulu starring Lamorne Morris isn’t exactly genre but it’s fairly genre adjacent. Keef stars as an African-American cartoonist on the verge of mainstream success, but his life changes and suddenly inanimate objects come to life and have him seeing the world in new ways. The visual style looks great, and it certainly looks to tackle relevant social issues in a fresh way.

The Twilight Saga: If you’ve been wanting to catch up on sparkly vampires and love stories, you’re in luck, because the whole Twilight saga is hitting Hulu this month. The series was a monster hit, and is admittedly an acquired taste, but if it’s your jam — rock on out.

Gemini Man: Will Smith stars in this rollicking sci-fi adventure about a man who faces off with a younger clone of himself. The effects work is excellent and wild, even if the story leaves a bit to be desired.

HIGHLIGHTS

The Boys Season 2: Arguably one of the biggest stories of the month, Amazon's acclaimed, bloody, foul-mouthed and mind-blowing (and frying) superhero series is back for its second season. The show follows a rag-tag group of average guys out to stop the corrupt superheroes running roughshod over the world. 

Utopia Season 1: This one is a bit twisty, but looks to be a good one. The show is a conspiracy thriller that follows a hardcore group of fans who realize the conspiracy from their favorite comic is actually true. From there, they kick off a wild adventure to save the world.

HIGHLIGHTS

Mulan: Disney’s latest live-action adaptation of a beloved animated adventure arrives not on the big screen but premium VOD. After punting the theatrical release a few times due to the pandemic, Disney finally made the decision shift the film to streaming. But instead of regular ol’ VOD, the movie will now debut for a $29.99 cost on Disney+, in addition to the service's regular subscription fee. 

The Wolverine: It’s often glossed over for the (admittedly better) Logan, but Hugh Jackman's previous solo X-Men film is also a great story. It gets to the heart of the character, has some interesting world building in the Marvel universe, and features some absolutely wild samurai fighting action — and now it's streaming on Disney+.

Raised By Wolves: HBO’s newest sci-fi series looks to be very much in that Westworld-y vein, and even brings Ridley Scott along as a producer. The show is set in a future where androids have been tasked with raising human children on a mysterious new planet. It’s an ambitious concept and one HBO looks to be pulling off with its usual big-budget aplomb.

The Invisible Man: If you missed it on the big screen or VOD, the recent genre horror thriller is hitting streaming this month. The film stars Elisabeth Moss as a woman being terrorized by an invisible ex-lover. It’s haunting, terrifying and extremely good. Not surprisingly, Moss is also great in it.

Color Out of Space: After a meteorite lands in the front yard of their farm, Nathan Gardner and his family find themselves battling a mutant extraterrestrial organism as it infects their minds and bodies, transforming their quiet rural life into a living nightmare. Based on the classic H.P. Lovecraft short story; adapted and directed by Richard Stanely. 

Spiral: Malik (Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman, American Horror Story), and Aaron (Ari Cohen, It: Chapter Two), a same-sex couple, move to a small town in search of a better environment for them and their 16-year-old daughter (Jennifer Laporte, Web of Dreams). But nothing is as it seems as something sinister lies behind the picturesque homes and welcoming faces of their new neighbors. With Ty Wood, Chandra West and Lochlyn Munroe. Written by Colin Minihan (writer of the Shudder Original Z and the upcoming new Urban Legend) and John Poliquin, directed by Kurtis David Harder (Summerland).
