Final trailer for Godzilla: King of the Monsters passes over the kaiju rainbow

One king to rule them all—Godzilla & Pals clash in the final, kaiju-sized trailer for King of the Monsters, with a few surprises along the way.

A sequel to 2014's Godzilla, this new film drastically ups the ante by introducing three classic Toho beasties: Mothra, Rodan, and, best of all, King Ghidorah. This time around, Michael Dougherty (Trick 'r Treat, Krampus) is sitting in the director's chair, and it looks like he ain't skimping one bit on that monster-on-monster action we crave so badly.

With all those skyscraper-sized creatures, you still need human characters to help ground the story. That's where Dr. Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga) comes in. Emma's a scientist for Monarch, the federal agency tasked with tracking down these "Titans" and figuring out possible ways of controlling them. Playing her ex-husband and daughter are Kyle Chandler (First Man) and Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things), respectively.

Watch the final trailer below. Set to an ethereal cover of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," this new footage underscores the haunting beauty (and awe-inspiring terror) of these massive creatures.

If you're paying attention, you'll hear Ken Watanabe's character from the first movie, Dr. Ishiro Serizawa, state that there are 17 of these Titans "and counting." Does that mean we'll get even more famous appearances beyond Mothra, Rodan, and three-headed Ghidorah? We sure hope so!

And with Godzilla attempting to secure his place as ruler of these animals, humanity won't be as complacent as it was last time. "This time, we join the fight," says Chandler's Dr. Mark Russell. CUT TO: a military stealth plane bombing the utter crap out of Ghidorah. To say we're excited for this all-out monster mash is the understatement of the year.

Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley), Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water), David Strathairn (The Expanse), Zhang Ziyi (Godzilla vs. Kong), Bradley Whitford (Get Out), O'Shea Jackson Jr. (Straight Outta Compton), and Aisha Hinds (If I Stay) all co-star in the highly anticipated blockbuster film.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters stomps into theaters May 31.
