Daniel Craig meets Rami Malek's James Bond villain in first twisting trailer for No Time to Die

By Josh Weiss
No Time to Die

After enough production troubles to bring down a raging elephant, the 25th James Bond movie from Eon Productions, No Time to Die, finally has an exciting first trailer. Directed by Cary Fukunaga (Maniac), the film marks Daniel Craig's last time in the role of Britain's most famous secret agent.

In the new trailer, we get to meet 007's latest foe, the nefarious and tech-savvy Safin, who is played by recent Oscar winner Rami Malek (Mr. Robot, Bohemian Rhapsody). Judging by the teaser footage, his motivations revolve around a desire to live beyond death. Is he perhaps hoping to upload his consciousness to some evil cloud?

Ana de Armas, Lashana Lynch, David Dencik, and Dali Benssalah, and Billy Magnussen join Malek as newcomers to the franchise.

You'll be happy to know that the trailer also informs us that Lynch, playing Nomi, is a female 00-agent. This confirms a rumor that's been around since the Captain Marvel alum was cast, although the jury is still out on whether Nomi has taken up the post of 007 or whether she has a different designation entirely. Whichever way the wind blows, Lynch still makes history as the first woman of color to portray a 00-agent, as Eve Moneypenny wasn't yet on that level in Skyfall.

That small teaser from Monday won't prepare you for the full thing. Take a look below:

While we thought he had found the love of his life in the form of Spectre's Dr. Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux), it looks like there's trouble in paradise. Swann, as it turns out, is harboring dangerous secrets of her own, probably giving James heartbreaking flashbacks to Vesper Lynd's betrayal in Casino Royale.

Breaking up with Madeleine, James retires from active duty for a quiet life in Jamaica. He's forced to get back into the world of espionage, however, when his friend from the CIA, Felix Leiter (Jeffrey Wright), asks for his help in tracking down a kidnapped scientist. It won't be easy as Dr. Swann is now working for MI6.

Ralph Fiennes (M), Naomie Harris (Eve Moneypenny), Rory Kinnear (Bill Tanner), Ben Whishaw (Q), and Christoph Waltz (Blofeld) return to play their characters from previous installments in the Craig era.

Ernst Stavro Blofeld, one of the biggest and best baddies ever to grace the Bond canon, can be seen in the trailer as a sort of Hannibal Lecter-type character, offering advice from prison that only a villain could give.

No Time to Die is the only Bond project in the Eon Productions series to be helmed by an American filmmaker. After Danny Boyle parted ways with the movie, the script had to be started from scratch. Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, Scott Z. Burns, and even Phoebe Waller-Bridge have all received credit for the screenplay.

No Time to Die hits theaters in the U.K. on April 3 before making its way over to America five days later. In the meantime, check out six new chatacter posters and a handful of first look stills in the gallery below...
