SYFY WIRE War of the Realms

Marvel's War of the Realms #1 debuts script at C2E2 2019

War of the Realms variant #1

The massive, Thor-adjacent storyline of War of the Realms is one of the major arcs coming to Marvel Comics this year, and over at C2E2 on Friday, SYFY WIRE caught a panel with Marvel talent director Rickey Purdin, editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski, editor Wil Moss, and associate editor Sarah Brunstad as they — along with the War of the Realms team (writer Jason Aaron, artist Russell Dauterman, and colorist Matthew Wilson) — explained how the book came together.

War of the Realms, which just dropped its variant covers, is about a large-scale conflict in which Midgard (aka Earth) is the final bastion against Malekith the Accursed and his army of Dark Elves.

Its panel started off by debuting a page from the script, which described Spider-Man, Blade, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Hulk, Daredevil, and Black Panther (among many others) teaming up to fight Malekith. Laufey, king of the Frost Giants (and Loki's real dad), stopped the conflict before it could start with a large, frosty weapon — not a good sign for the Avengers-and-more team-up.

Another, later page from the script detailed a Loki/Malekith disguise reveal along with an army of Frost Giants. Thor is definitely surrounded. Some concept art for the series showed off a cold-weather outfit for Captain America (furry collars are in) as well as new looks for Odin and Freya. Spider-Man is even getting a Viking helmet. All that's clear is that Cap is headed to the land of the Frost Giants while many of the heroes take on Asgardian elements.

Aaron also revealed that he'd recently turned in the final issue's script for War of the Realms — now it's up to Dauterman and Wilson to put the art together.

Fans can see the finished products when War of the Realms #1 hits stores in April.
