Olivia Wilde set to direct, spin new web for ‘secret’ Marvel movie at Sony
Marvel's movie web may be getting bigger. Marvel has reportedly struck an agreement with Tron: Legacy star Olivia Wilde to direct a new film for Sony.
The project, reported by Deadline as a previously undisclosed “secret” movie, reportedly will center on a female Marvel character, one who potentially could be Spider-Woman. “While not confirmed, it is expected that the story will be centered on Spider-Woman,” the report states.
Wilde's tweet of the news certainly adds to that expectation...
The movie reportedly will be written by Wilde and Katie Silberman (Tom & Jerry), who wrote the script for Wilde's last directed feature, Booksmart. The duo are also still seemingly attached to psychological thriller Don't Worry, Darling, starring Florence Pugh, Chris Pine, Shia LaBeouf, and Dakota Johnson.
Former Sony Chairperson Amy Pascal is producing the new Marvel film, with Rachel O’Connor serving as executive producer. The two already have a close working relationship with Wilde, thanks to their collaboration on a separate Christmas movie for Universal, which reportedly will come before the Marvel project. Pascal also has solid Spidey bonafides, not only with the original Tobey Maguire/Andrew Garfield Sony films, but also independently producing Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Venom, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, as well as its upcoming sequel.
So far, it appears that Wilde’s Marvel movie is distinct from Sony’s other female-focused, Spidey-adjacent project: a planned Madame Web movie, reported earlier this year with S.J. Clarkson (Jessica Jones) set to direct. If Wilde’s project indeed ends up spinning a Spider-Woman story, it would mark another expansion in Sony’s growing menagerie of movie heroes rooted in Spider-Man lore — along with Venom, Morbius, Madame Web, and (of course) all the variations of Spider-Man who’ve shown up in animated form in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
