Midtown Comics in New York's Times Square is usually busy on a Wednesday, as it’s the day new comics are released each week. But Jan. 26, 2022 kicked the excitement up with a whole other group of people hitting the New York comics mainstay. Fans celebrating the imminent return of SYFY’s Resident Alien — super fans, regular fans, and people who will soon become fans — joined the regular comic throng at an event focused on the return of the hit series.

Based on the Dark Horse comic by Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse, the SYFY original was created by Chris Sheridan. It follows the misadventures of an alien who hides on Earth following a crash, assuming the identity of a doctor named Harry Vanderspeigle. With genre veteran Alan Tudyk in the lead role, Season 1 of the series met with acclaim from critics and fans alike.

At the end of Season 1, Vanderspeigle decided not to follow through with a mission to kill all humans. Season 2, premiering tonight at 9 p.m. ET, will reveal the fallout from that decision on Harry and the humans he's gotten to know along the way.

The multitude of fans attending the event (all of whom were properly masked) got to take photos with a surprisingly lifelike standee of Tudyk in character. They also made off with free Resident Alien swag, including T-shirts. Many of them had already seen Season 1, including one fan in attendance named Cheryl.

“I’m a fan of Harry!” Cheryl said, noting she’s watched all of Season 1 and she couldn’t wait for Season 2. “It’s so funny. I loved his character, how he’s cursing in front of children, there’s no filter, I love it.” What is she looking forward to in terms of Season 2? “I’m glad to see that he wants to save the planet. I’m hoping to see that side of him,” she said. No matter what happens, she’s gonna be watching. As she said, “I’m gonna be there. I’m hooked.”

Some visitors to the promotion had not seen the series before, but are keen to check it out now. Visitor Charlene said, “I grew up watching Alien-type shows, so this is really cool,” and added that she intended to start the series from the beginning. Sharm, another new fan, added, “Everyone told us it’s the perfect show to binge watch. So we’re gonna start binging Season 1, and then we don’t have to wait for 2.”

Neither had heard much about the series before, but thanks to the event, they are raring to go. “Now you got us interested,” Sharm said.

The alien landing continued throughout the day, with a spaceship's worth of fans (and at least one adorable dog) taking photos and getting hyped for the new season. Some of them didn’t initially plan on swinging by Midtown Comics this week, but word of the Resident Alien action drew them in.

“I saw this in instagram…” Cheryl said, “…and I told my husband, bye, gotta go, gotta go to Times Square. And I came down here.”

The all-new season of Resident Alien premieres tonight at on SYFY. You can stream Season 1 of the series on SYFY.com as well as the SYFY app, and new episodes stream the next day on Peacock.
