Shazam! director David F. Sandberg has had a healthy sense of humor throughout the pandemic-ridden summer, releasing plenty of short films and inside looks at his filmmaking process, but now he's taken it to the next level with a fake trailer for a Shazam! sequel.
Based off the surreal idea that some websites allow random fans to post reviews of films that not only aren't out yet, but haven't even starting shooting yet, Sandberg dropped a trailer filled with pull-quotes from people that have nothing to do with Shazam! 2. It's as weird and funny as DC fans might expect from the guy behind one of Warner Bros.' strangest and funniest superhero adaptations.
Take a look:
"We haven't shot Shazam 2 yet but there are already reviews up on Letterboxd," Sandberg wrote. "I'm pretty sure that means we're allowed to start using review quotes for marketing."
From the basic and unnecessary ("I'm fine with this," writes Roberto the Person) to the hilarious harassment of its star ("Jack Dylan Grazer im free Thursday night to paint ur nails and dance in ur room to Fleetwood Mac," writes Nev), these goofy fan posts -- all ostensibly about Shazam! 2, a film that doesn't yet exist -- highlight the ridiculous nature of the service. It's the same vein as when an angry rabble review-bombs something ahead of its release, only much, much sillier.
At least fans know that Sandberg hasn't lost his sense of humor as they wait for Shazam! 2's planned Nov. 4, 2022, release.
