Sony's Spider-Man spinoff Kraven the Hunter looking to ensnare Triple Frontier's J.C. Chandor as director
Sony Pictures' Kraven the Hunter is one step closer to hunting some big game on the big screen. SYFY WIRE has learned that the studio is looking to tap J.C. Chandor (A Most Violent Year, Triple Frontier) to direct the film. Matt Tolmach and Avi Arad are attached as producers, while Richard Wenk (screenwriter for Sony's Equalizer movies) is penning the script with Art Marcum and Matt Holloway (the duo behind 2008's Iron Man and the upcoming Morbius).
Chandor's potential hiring is the first big development on the project since October 2018 when Wenk promised that the film would "adhere very closely" to the character's comic book lore.
Part of Spider-Man's rogues' gallery and half-brother to the Chameleon, Sergei Kravinoff was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in the early 1960s. The hunt-happy villain briefly succeeded in killing his wall-crawler nemesis in J. M. DeMatteis and Mike Zeck's famous 1987 storyline: "Kraven's Last Hunt." Wenk has said that he looked to this specific arc for inspiration.
"Everybody wants to make the right movie, the classic movie, and nobody's rushing to turn out some character movie because it's part of that world," the writer said.
Chandor, who also wrote/directed Margin Call and All Is Lost, has yet to dip his creative toe in genre waters. He's currently in pre-production on The Connection, a TV show created by Matt Charman.
Since rebooting the Spidey IP with Tom Holland's Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War, Sony has been steadily building outs its arachnid-centric cinematic universe with projects like Into the Spider-Verse and Venom. Sequels/spinoffs to Venom, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Verse are all on the way, as are films centered around Madame Web and the aforementioned Morbius.
Just yesterday, it was confirmed that Olivia Wilde (Booksmart) would helm an unnamed Marvel movie (very possibly a Spider-Woman standalone) for the studio.
