WIRE Buzz: Ayo Edebiri boards Big Mouth as Missy; New Mutants drops toothy new clip; and Mulan music video

Following Jenny Slate's departure from Big Mouth, Netflix has found a replacement for the role of awkward pre-teen Missy. Per Variety, Ayo Edebiri (an actress, writer, comedian, and producer — a quadruple threat!) has been cast in the pubescent animated comedy series co-created by Nick Kroll.

"I was definitely a very uncomfortable child, so I think the show speaks to that and a lot of those feelings, which still resonate with me as an adult," she told Variety. “I’m back home in my childhood bedroom right now and on my bookshelf, in between A Series of Unfortunate Events, is Bill Clinton’s autobiography and Nelson Mandela’s autobiography and a translation of The Iliad in Latin. I was a true dork. So I don’t think I have to go too far to connect with Missy.”

Slate will voice Missy for the majority of Season 4 (a premiere date has yet to be announced) before Edebiri takes over in the second-to-last episode. She's already recorded her dialogue and is a part of  the writers' room for Season 5.

"The transition is a nice farewell to Jenny in that moment, too, in a way," Edebiri added, explaining that while her take on the character is different, it still pays "homage" to Slate's performance. "The voice I found is also because of the work Jenny did, too."

With The New Mutants now playing in theaters, Disney has decided to entice potential viewers with a short, yet horrifying, clip from the new X-Men project from writer-director Josh Boone.

Naturally set during a dark and stormy night, the scene involves Illyana Rasputin/Magik (Anya Taylor-Joy), Sam Guthrie/Cannonball (Charlie Heaton), and Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane (Maisie Williams). Hearing a strange sound emanating from her room, Magik goes to investigate. Sam advises her not to open the door as Rahne goes to find Dr. Cecilia Reyes (Alice Braga). Inside the room, we see a young girl (presumably Illyana at an earlier age) being watched over by a faceless monster with a smiley mask and a mouth full of sharp teeth. It's sure to give you flashbacks to the Pale Man in Pan's Labyrinth.

Watch now:

Written by Boone and his childhood friend, Knate Lee, The New Mutants also stars Blu Hunt ("Dani Moonstar/Mirage") and Henry Zaga ("Roberto da Costa/Sunspot"). This will be the final X-Men feature produced by 20th Century Fox. Following the Disney-Fox merger last year, Marvel's mutants can now start to join the MCU.

To celebrate the theatrical release after so many years of uncertainty, Disney also unveiled one more movie poster, which you can check out below:

"I think with social distancing and masks and being done the way it’s supposed to be done, that it’s a pretty amazing form of entertainment that gives you the solace of being with others. [It] also allows you to be with others through sharing their experiences in the movie," Boone told SYFY WIRE.

Check out a brand-new music video for Niki Caro's Mulan remake ahead of the film's premiere on Disney+ next week. The video features a tweaked version of "Reflection" (a song featured in the 1998 animated version) performed by Christina Aguilera. It's entirely fitting that she return for this project, as Aguilera sang a cover of the same track for the end credits of the original.

The singer also has an original song on the remake's soundtrack entitled "Loyal Brave True," which was revealed in early March. It was written by composer Harry Gregson-Williams, Jamie Hartman, Rosi Golan, and Billy Crabtree.

"The score by Harry is every bit as epic and emotional and thrilling as the movie itself. It’s one of the reasons the movie is so much all of those things," Caro exclusively told SYFY WIRE earlier this year. "Working with him to bring the essence of some of the iconic music in the animation through was such an interesting and demanding process. It has resulted in one of the most satisfying sequences in the movie, an original song that is so beautiful and appropriate. It all came about very organically, but its roots are in us wanting and needing to honor the iconic music from the animation."

Disney+ subscribers will be able to watch Mulan via a Premier Access fee of $30, starting Friday, Sep. 4. Depending on the success of this unconventional rollout model, the Mouse House may end up releasing more high-end straight-to-streaming releases during the COVID-19 pandemic.
