SYFY WIRE The Umbrella Academy

WIRE BUZZ: Umbrella Academy's 'Deathly' comic spin-off; Stanley Tucci to AMC; Supernatural-Good Omens charity

By Nivea Serrao
The Umbrella Academy Season 2

The Umbrella Academy will soon be opening its doors for a second season of Hargreeves sibling hijinks on Netflix, but for any fans craving extra content featuring fan-favorite Klaus (AKA “The Séance”) there’s a little something extra on the horizon.

Gerard Way — one of the comic’s creator’s and lead singer of My Chemical Romance — will be writing his first spin-off of the original series he created with Gabriel Bá, and it will focus on none other than the long-suffering, dead-people-seeing Hargreeves brother (played by Robert Sheehan) and is set in the 10 years before the start of the series.

Titled You Look Like Death, the comic will tell the story of what happens immediately after Klaus is kicked out of the UA mansion by his father Sir Reginald Hargreeves (AKA "The Monocle"). Following his expulsion from the family home, the then-18-year-old will head towards Los Angeles where he'll get himself tangled up with not just magical narcotics, but also a vampire drug lord — glimpses of which you can see in the comic trailer announced by Forbes.

The spin-off will see Way once again join forces with Shaun Simon (his co-writer on Fabulous Killjoys), while I.N.J. Culbard (Everything, The New Deadwardians) will handle art and Nate Piekos (The Umbrella Academy: Hotel Oblivion) serves as letterer. Bá will also be involved, drawing covers for each of the series' issues.

You Look Like Death: Tales From The Umbrella Academy goes on sale Sept. 16. Season 2 of The Umbrella Academy hits Netflix on July 31.

Fortune favors the bold — or at least La Fortuna favors Stanley Tucci.

The Hunger Games actor will star in a new AMC series co-created by director Alejandro Amenábar (The Others) and Alejandro Hernandez.

The upcoming thriller is inspired by the graphic novel El Tesoro del Cisne Negro (The Treasure of the Black Swan) and tells the story of Alex Ventura (played by Álvaro Mel), a young inexperienced Spanish diplomat who unintentionally finds himself in charge of a mission to recover sunken treasure stolen by adventurer Frank Wild (Tucci). On his quest to retrieve the lost treasure, Alex will team up with Spanish public official Lucía (Ana Polvorosa), and Jonas Pierce, an American lawyer with a penchant for pirate tales.

The cast also includes Clarke Peters (His Dark Materials), T’Nia Miller (The Feed), Karra Elejalde, Manolo Solo (Pan’s Labyrinth), Blanca Portillo, and Pedro Casablanc.

The graphic novel — which was created by Guillermo Corral and Paco Roca — is itself based on a real-life treasure hunt which saw Spanish officials wrestle with an American firm called Odyssey when they refused to turn over the details of the treasure trove they discovered off the coast of Spain. Though, as with all fictional adaptations, both creators took some liberties with their depiction of events, including, as the BBC reports, omitting the five-year-long court case that went all the way up to the Supreme Court, before ruling in the Spanish Government's favor.

Production on the six-episode series kicks off this week in Spain, before eventually moving to North America next year, with Amenábar directing every episode. The series is expected to premiere in late 2021.

It's an angelic crossover not even heaven could have dreamt up!

Supernatural's Misha Collins is teaming up with Good Omens' Michael Sheen to raise money for homelessness relief, including those affected by COVID-19.

The actors, both of who play angels in their respective series (Collins as Castiel on The CW series and Sheen as Aziraphale in the Neil Gaiman-Terry Pratchett adaptation), have launched the Super Good campaign which will sell t-shirts and a necklace featuring a design of both their characters together, as well as angel wings, with all proceeds going to help charities and organizations that work towards helping those facing homelessness.

The campaign will be run through Stands, an online portal that allows public figures to collaborate with artists and fan creators to design and create products that can be sold to raise money for various causes. In this case, both the t-shirts and the charm necklace featured in the campaign were drawn by artist Scout Villegas

Both actors will be discussing their campaign in a joint livestream hosted on their social media platforms on July 30 at 3 p.m. ET. The Super Good campaign is currently live.
