Guillermo del Toro's stop-motion Pinocchio adds Cate Blanchett, Tim Blake Nelson, Finn Wolfhard to star-studded Netflix cast

There seems to be an endless amount of new Pinocchio takes on the way in the near future, but none more exciting than the stop-motion animated version coming to Netflix from genre king Guillermo del Toro. One of the director's long-gestating projects, his take on the classic Carlo Collodi story has been in development hell for years — until the Scrooge McDuck-level vaults of the streamer opened up. Now GDT has added to his cast — one that already included a singing Ewan McGregor as Cricket.

The film (co-directed by del Toro and Fantastic Mr. Fox head Mark Gustafson from a script by del Toro and Patrick McHale) has added a trifecta of awesome actors: Cate Blanchett, Tim Blake Nelson, and Finn Wolfhard:

These are some heavy genre hitters right here. Stranger Things lead and Ghostbusters heir Wolfhard alongside Watchmen's recent scene-stealer Nelson and Thor: Ragnarok's Hela herself? It's a bounty of riches. Blanchett may have scored the role thanks to her work on GDT's upcoming Nightmare Alley, though maybe the filmmaker's just a big Galadriel fan.

These three join David Bradley's Gepetto, Gregory Mann's Pinocchio, and others played by the likes of John Turturro, Ron Perlman, Christoph Waltz, Tilda Swinton, and Burn Gorman. Expect creepy, endearing, and (yes) musical good times to come from this fairy tale reimagining.

But that's not all the big news regarding GDT and his Pinocchio home. This casting coup comes as del Toro signs an overall deal with Netflix, giving the streamer one of genre's top filmmakers and giving GDT a solid line of credit at the place where he's been working some animated magic already with his trilogy of Tales of Arcadia series. Perhaps fans will get to see his At the Mountains of Madness after all.

Pinocchio looks to hit Netflix in 2021.
