Last year, SYFY WIRE called upon the vast fandom of J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World to submit videos of themselves in order to be selected as our official Harry Potter Superfans. A multitude of passionate responses were received, but only two fans came out on top: Katie Aiani and Ori Zaff. Because of their victory, Katie and Ori were given the opportunity to travel to Paris to cover the world premiere of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. They were our correspondents on the red carpet and got to interview the cast and creative team behind the film. Now it’s time to tell Katie and Ori’s stories.
Our latest video features a behind-the-scenes glimpse at Katie and Ori’s trip to Paris, including close encounters with Jude Law and Rowling herself. Unsurprisingly, both superfans compared being chosen as the winners to being chosen by the Goblet of Fire. And they both have a love of Harry Potter that dates back to their respective childhoods.
“My very first interaction with Harry Potter happened when my father was reading the first book to my younger sister,” recalled Katie. “The first words I heard were ‘earwax-flavored jelly bean.’ And I was like, ‘That’s disgusting.’ She was so offended, she said, ‘This is the best book I’ve ever read. Do not come out of this room until you’ve read it.’ And she threw the book at me. By the next morning, when she woke up, her other two books were already gone off the shelf.”
