WIRE Buzz: Netflix orders Rick Riordan film series; No Time to Die spotlights its villain; and more

The Red Pyramid

As Disney+ continues to develop its Percy Jackson TV series, Netflix is getting in on some of the Rick Riordan action. The author confirmed on his blog that the streamer plans to launch a film series based on the author's Kane Chronicles trilogy, which are firmly rooted in Egyptian mythology.

"We have been working on this deal since last October, about the same time we started working on Percy, and I’m so glad I can now announce it! That’s all I can say for the moment, but stay tuned," Riordan wrote.

Comprised of The Red Pyramid (2010), The Throne of Fire (2011), and The Serpent's Shadow (2012), the Kane trilogy follows a similar format to the Percy Jackson books, as it centers around protagonists who: A) come from magical stock and B) go on adventures involving the famous deities of humanity's earliest days. In this case, the demigod-like heroes are Carter and Sadie Kane, a pair of magician siblings descended from ancient pharaohs.

Meet Rami Malek's menacing James Bond villain, Safin, in a brand-new featurette for No Time to Die. While we still don't know what the scarred antagonist's genocidal scheme entails, the latest trailer did confirm that he has a past with both Dr. Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux) and Blofeld (Christoph Waltz).

"What I really wanted from Safin was to make him unsettling, thinking of himself as being heroic," Malek (who recently took home an Oscar for playing Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody) says in the video below. "Safin is a formidable adversary [and] James Bond has to adapt."

"What he wants and what he's willing to do makes him a very frightening character, both personally to Bond, but also on a global level," adds director Cary Joji Fukunaga, who also shares script credit with Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

Take a look:

The 25th Bond film will officially put an end Daniel Craig's 007 tenure, which first began with 2006's Casino Royale. Once the project is released, Craig will have starred in five Bond movies. Jeffrey Wright, Lashana Lynch, Naomie Harris, Ana de Armas, Ben Whishaw, Ralph Fiennes, Rory Kinnear, Dali Benssalah, Billy Magnussen, and David Dencik co-star in No Time to Die.

After starring in The Mandalorian, Werner Herzog has caught the galactic fever.

SYFY WIRE has confirmed that the legendary filmmaker and his son, Rudolph, have teamed up with Gunpowder & Sky, Spring Films, and Taglicht Media on Last Exit: Space, a documentary about humanity's hope to colonize the cosmos in the face of dwindling planetary resources. Could one of the 100 billion+ planets in the Milky Way become our species' next home? Werner is set to executive-produce and narrate the project (kicking off production this fall), which is being directed by Rudolph.

"I’m excited to work with such a great team, including Taglicht’s Bernd Wilting, Spring’s André Singer and now Gunpowder & Sky," Rudolph said in a statement. "The film will raise the question if we should really project our hopes into our galaxy, believing that there might be a place out there that might shelter us humans once the resources of the earth have been exhausted. I’m looking forward to going on a quest with Werner to find the answer."

"When you get the chance to work with masterful creators like Werner and Rudolph, you take it and thank your lucky stars," added Jake Hanly, VP of acquisitions at Gunpowder & Sky. "Exploring uncharted territory and shedding light on the new and unknown is part of Gunpowder & Sky’s genetic makeup. And, with the Herzogs at the helm, we can hardly wait to invite space enthusiasts and dreamers alike to join us to the farthest reaches of the universe."
