SDCC: Archer renewed for coma-kicking Season 11

By Donnie Lederer
Archer

For the last few seasons, Archer has been on a consistent mission of reinvention. While the real Archer lies in a coma, his subconscious has transported the cast into alternate realities. Two seasons ago they were part of a 1940s film noir story. Last season saw them on a dangerous remote island. This year in Archer 1999, our "heroes" are crew members of the MV Seamus as they encounter adventure after adventure — and let's be honest, by "adventure," we mean "getting into a boatload of trouble".

The cast and crew got together today at SDCC 2019 for their seemingly annual panel. On hand were executive producers Matt Thompson and Casey Willis, as well as cast members H. Jon Benjamin, Aisha Tyler, Jessica Walter, Chris Parnell, Amber Nash, and Lucky Yates.

This panel was extra special, as it was announced that Archer 1999 will NOT be the final adventure for our heroes. The show was renewed for an 11th season, which is now set to premiere in 2020. "We are incredibly excited for our 11th season and look forward to Archer waking up from his coma and returning to a spy world that has continued without him for the past three years,” said EP Casey Willis in a press release.

Moderated by Willis, the panel, attended by SYFY WIRE, opened with the premiere of the season's penultimate episode, "Cubert," about a strange cube the crew finds in space. Without spoiling anything, things start to come together in this episode.

Following the screening, the discussion began with the cast recalling their favorite of the "coma seasons." Benjamin (Sterling Archer) liked Danger Island, while Tyler (Lana Kane) liked Dreamland because she got to sing. As far as favorite characters go, Nash enjoyed the gender-neutral Detective Poovey.

Archer 1999 covers a lot of tropes found in some of our favorite science fiction movies, the biggest of which are from the 1979 classic Alien. According to Willis, "the Alien references will not stop." With only two episodes left this season, expect to be reminded of the Nostromo quite a bit.

Next, an innocent question turned into a hilarious bit. When asked what superpower the cast would have in a superhero-themed season (not that Season 11 will be that, just as a "what-if"), Walter answered "Wonder Woman." When you think about it, Wonder Woman IS the total package, so it makes sense. Tyler then tore down the whole question: "If you can only fly, you can't fight. If you have super strength, it will take you two days to get there because you have to catch a plane. The whole construct is bullsh*t," she exclaimed to enormous laughter from the crowd.

The panel closed out with what other types of realities the team would like to venture into next. A group consensus was politics. "We could infiltrate the government, and I would be Nancy Pelosi," said Walter. Nash would like to see a Viking season, while Yates declared his the best with the adorable "Archer Babies."

Even with the revelation of Archer's eventual recovery, we've seen crazier things from this show, so anything can still happen.

You can catch Archer 1999 Wednesdays on FXX.
