Superman: Red Son movie announced at SDCC Batman: Hush premiere

Batman Hush

Batman: Hush, one of the classic Batman stories in the comic canon, is the latest animated feature film to head to the DC Universe streaming service. Batman: Hush screened at San Diego Comic-Con before its public release and SYFY WIRE was there to see it.

The film (which had one major change in its adaptation) played like gangbusters, capturing the mysterious villain and Batman's romantic side with equel verve. And on top of it all, the screening was capped off by a panel including stars Jason O’Mara (Batman), Jennifer Morrison (Catwoman), Maury Sterling, Geoffrey Arend, Hynden Walch, Bruce Thomas, alongside director Justin Copeland, screenwriter Ernie Altbacker, character designer Phil Bourassa, and executive producer James Tucker. The gaggle of talent had plenty to say about the process but the most exciting announcement came at the end of the panel: DC will be tackling Superman: Red Son for the next film in its animated series. This super-popular pick, debuting in early 2020, will be followed by Justice League Dark: Apokolips War and the original animation Superman: Man of Tomorrow.

In addition, Altbacker explained some of the trims that ended up on the cutting room floor. By focusing on the romance with Catwoman and paring down the rogue's gallery, they aimed for keeping the spirit of Hush. Tucker brought up the trip to Metropolis, where Batman and Superman squared off, which needed tweaking just to keep it in the film - but it was a priority to keep Batman's greatest rival on board. In keeping foes like Joker, Harley Quinn, Clayface, and more, Hush was able to curtail its sprawling narrative into the brisk animation.

Fans can see the Bat-excellence for themselves when Batman: Hush hits digital on July 20, home release on Aug. 6, and DC Universe on Aug. 13.
