Chosen One Of The Day: Margo’s blinged-out eye patch on The Magicians
The Magicians might have first been billed as a grown-up Harry Potter but over the course of four seasons, the show has elevated itself beyond J.K. Rowling’s decidedly rosier portrait of hidden magical worlds.
For one, there are no wands to be found, but there are plenty of orgies to keep you entertained. There’s also the kind of character development prestige shows on HBO would kill for, hard-partying Gods, peacock-human hybrids that send characters on magical quests, and black Santa. But one of the biggest draws of this show is a character named Margo.
Margo (Summer Bishil) is a kickass magician who was also recently elected as High King of Fillory, which means she basically rules over a magical universe all by her damn self. She’s sassy and sarcastic, she’s not afraid to behead people that get in her way, and, oh yeah, she can rock the hell out of an eyepatch.
In season two, with magic gone and Fillory at war with fairies, Margo lost an eye in an attempt to make right a wrong — she sacrificed her bestie’s unborn child for her kingdom, as one does. For most, losing such a vital organ would be devastating. For Margo, it was an opportunity to accessorize. Thus, began a unique period in the show’s history I like to call the “Eyepatch Era.”
Here she is sporting an intricately carved eye coverlet while threatening to go full Britney Spears circa ’07.Oh, and what’s this? Just Margo masking a giant hole in her face with a statement-making, gold-brush fleur-de-lis like the goddamn royalty she is. Here’s Margo inciting a riot with a lovely rose-embroidered number because revolutions should always be well-dressed. Our goth King presides over a feast with this shimmering black eyelet which just so happens to be perfectly-paired with her lipstick. That’s not extra enough for you? Here, let’s add some velvet-capped shoulder pads. What now?! And even in the show’s most recent season, as Margo and her friends assume alter-egos after having their memories wiped, she still manages to put us all to shame. Her assistant bought her this polyester piece of crap from a Duane Reade drugstore, y’all. Do you know what she did? She put a broach on it. In conclusion, to say that Margo Hanson, High King of Fillory, is simply a style icon is a grave injustice, an insult to her personhood. Margo is resilient, determined, adaptable, and extra AF. Her eyewear merely reflects that. Show some damn respect and bow to this b*tch.
