Exclusive: BOOM! Studios celebrates 25 years of Buffy with an oversized anniversary one-shot
It's Buffy's 25th anniversary, and BOOM!'s celebrating with a massive lineup of stories.
March 2022 marks 25 years since the premiere of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the supernatural dramedy that went on to become one of the most influential genre stories of its era, inspiring countless creators and, in the years since, spinning out continuing adventures for its characters on the comics page. Buffy's importance in the pop culture lexicon, even now, is almost immeasurable, so it's no surprise that BOOM! Studios is planning something big for its current line of comics starring the legendary vampire Slayer and her friends.
Today, SYFY WIRE can exclusively reveal that BOOM! will release the oversized one-shot Buffy the Vampire Slayer 25th Anniversary Special in March, bringing together a roster of all-star creators to tell new stories set across the "multiverse" of Buffy, and paving the way for what's next. The issue will arrive just two months after BOOM! celebrates three years of its own line of Buffy comics, which arrived in 2019 with a brand-new continuity that's since spun off into new stories starring Willow, Angel, and many more key characters.
Featuring new work by writers Jeremy Lambert, Lilah Sturges, Danny Lore, Casey Gilly, and Sarah Gailey and artists Claudia Balboni, Claire Roe, Bayleigh Underwood, Marianna Ignazzi, and Carlos Olivares, the Buffy 25th anniversary special will ask big questions like "Where in the Multiverse is Buffy?" and "What happened to the Scooby Gang?" while also telling new stories with major implications for the future of BOOM!'s own Buffy continuity. Among the stories included in the one-shot is a new epilogue to the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series launched from BOOM! in 2019, and a prologue written by Gailey and drawn by Olivares that will pave the way for a new Buffy series set in BOOM!'s own Buffyverse. So, it's past, present, and future all wrapped up in one big special issue.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics date all the way back to 1998, beginning with self-contained stories before transitioning into full-on continuations of the series. When BOOM! took over the Buffy comics brand after years of stories set after the original TV series, the publisher went in a bold new direction, establishing a new continuity that began with Buffy's arrival in Sunnydale, allowing writers and artists to re-tell the entire Buffy saga with fresh eyes.
What follows was three years (and counting) of new stories following Buffy and her various allies and enemies, including the crossover event Hellmouth and spinoff series focused on characters like Willow and Angel. Now, with the 25th anniversary special, BOOM! aims to chart a course into the next chapter of its own Buffy saga.
